If anyone is thinking of selling a car privately, be aware of the following scam that has been tried recently.

Example: You advertise your car for sale at, say, £40,000.
You receive a call from someone saying that it is just what he wants.
Asks you a few questions and says he’ll buy it.

He claims to be from a company and the funds will show the company name eg BB Finance on your account statement,

He asks you for your name, bank details and as much information about you, as he thinks he can get, without raising too much suspicion.
He’ll tell you that he’ll deposit the funds *in a few days* and arrange for a collection company to collect the car, once you’re happy that the funds are in your account.
You check your account and find the full amount is in your account.

WARNING! THE FUNDS ARE A LOAN THAT HE HAS APPLIED FOR IN YOUR NAME !

It’s known in the trade as a bounce back.

Budster. Thanks for flagging it. It makes it a difficult one to spot if the funds go into your account. I know even buying though dealers can be an issue. A friend bought a Ducati through the Colchester dealership who then had their email hacked. He received a mail asking for a deposit which he sent. You can guess the rest.

Craig. You’re correct. I double checked with my contact and amended the original post.

A near miss was posted by a car dealer on Youtube 3 days ago, see - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPTnCp_FPp8.

The way the story is told - and I see no reason to doubt it (he's either a very good actor or running on adrenalin) - the full balance was transferred to the seller's bank account within about 24hrs of first being contacted by the 'buyer'. This is definitely a scam to be aware of and the speed of the money transfer is not an indication of legitamacy.
