Hi
I’m looking for some help. I have a plus 8, fitted with the R380 gearbox.

After a sudden deterioration in gear selection I carried out some research. The problem was symptomatic of the locking grub screw on the remote shift becoming loose, so after removing the seats, tunnel & gearbox housing I found the grub screw to be ok - however one of the legs on the remote bias spring has broken & I am struggling to find a part number - can anyone give me a clue - I believe this remote shift is the same as that fitted to the Rover SD1 ?

There is a few interesting points to watch out for on the gearbox particulary if you have the gearbox cabin mounted covers removed you should consider...

Check the remote gear selector rubbers they often harden and perish and make gear selection more difficult ...replace with poly bushes.

Check the gear selector 'cup' for damage or fatigue as the mounting tab breaks off...

See photos below, I do have a supplier and part no for the poly bushes

Rob I had the same problem with the cup on my +4. Rimmer's eventually supplied one. Short term I did something similar but with pop riveting.

The cup is rarer than hen’s teeth. Mine suffered the tab breaking and I tried everywhere I could to get a replacement. It had been welded back already by a previous owner. Nobody, even Rimmers and other specialists had any.
I had to make a new bracket to hold it in place. I also put a few drops of oil down the top to reduce friction stressing it.
Everyone with the same gear selector in owners clubs for Cobra,TVR, everyone else with R380 boxes would love replacements.
I reckon there is potential for someone with the equipment to make them to get some trade. The tab is the weakness so strengthening lugs would help.

I must admit I had given up on Rimmers and I think about 6 months later one arrived, but that was years ago.

Looks like I'll need a bit of spring steel rod & cast my mind back to my apprenticeship to hone the limited blacksmith skills they taught me?

Yes smudger1, a fun project. You could try a 3D printer as per Bonesie!
Wow! Did I just think of that? A man maths idea to justify buying one!
