Could I please canvas the sage advice of forum members on the following decision.

I have a broken diaphragm spring. I have tried a variety of avenues to obtain a replacement item but it seems that such things only come as a complete set.
I have had the local (only?) clutch person look at my bits n pieces and he also can not source a diaphragm.
He can rebuild by buying a pressure plate set similar to current and modifying it all to work.
He has also suggested making a flywheel and using a Toyota pressure plate unit and friction plate. This would be larger diameter than current standard. This would make future replacements easy as would be common componentry.
Lastly I can buy ex Morgan ( Brands Hatch Morgan) the complete set.

All three options are approx the same cost, except for the extra shipping and tax from BHM Which won’t be cheap. One of the disadvantages of residing in New Zealand

So, which to decide on?

I don’t suppose any TM members have a M3W diaphragm plate lurking somewhere waiting to be released back into the wild?

I have contacted the company in the UK which makes the clutch, but they passed me over to Mr Evans at Morgan.
All clutch suppliers I have contacted will only supply the complete pressure plate set. I presume thus is because there is some magic in re-assembling the units???

Have you checked out this THREAD? The current advice seems to be to ship all your bits to CG Motorsport and have them rebuild it for you. I know that Leeds is a long way from Auckland but I reckon that it may still work out to be cost-effective for you (AND CG Motorsport know what they are doing).

If your guy decides to try a Miata clutch/flywheel setup, I would be very interested in the outcome. There are aluminum and steel lightweight flywheels available for the Miata and I also read that they are larger in diameter and that can't be all bad either.

Inquiring minds want to know...

+2 Miata set ups can take lots of abuse. Seems like if the weight worked then trying to make the Miata stuff work would be the best. If I recall you can get a 8lb fly wheel for a Miata. I wonder how much the stock unit weighs.

Clutch weights are, as removed and unclean
Flywheel.........3.156kg 7lb 2 oz
Friction plate...0.900kg
Clutch Cover set...2.212kg

Size is an issue for any nonstandard unit. Bell housing to centre of shaft is approx 140mm so 280mm dia
Current clutch cover is around 230mm dia
Current unit friction plate is 184mm which is quite small compared to common standard units

At present I am leaning to go with the status quo to retain originality ?.

I have been in contact with CG and they will rebuild but not sell diaphragm on its own. I am somewhat concerned with sending clutch around the world, from both a cost and risk of being lost or damaged point of view.
Difficulties of being in the colonies, sigh

Anybody know what the torque specifications are for the current unit?
