After a rather uneventful 4300 miles in my 3 wheeler, its clutch release failed. Suspecting the master cylinder, I inspected it, but found no evidence of hydraulic fluid leakage. I was also a bit perplexed in that the hydraulic fluid reservoir level has dropped little, if any. I am suspecting the slave cylinder, but have not raised the machine on the lift to investigate. My question: Is the slave cylinder near the throwout fork difficult to access and service?
Thank you,
Tom

It is an engine out job to access the clutch slave cylinder.

Hi piloto
I had a similar issue and it was the seals failing in the master cylinder on the pedal box. No drop in fluid, no leaks but no actuation of clutch when pedal pushed.
I couldn’t source a unit in NZ although they are not expensive ex Morgan. I just got existing unit reconditioned.
Initially was very concerned that the slave had failed, which on my 2012 car was inside bell housing and would of meant engine out! Very relieved it was the master

Begs the question, if the slave cylinder fails on the internal version, can it be converted to the external version after the engine is removed?

Great question, because I hate the way the clutch seems to be all at the end of the travel . With an external adjust you should be able to adjust the engagement where you want it.

Gentlemen, thank you for your responses. I will address the master cylinder first, and hope for the best. The engine out thing does not appeal in the least.

Unfortunately they are all internal, there are no external versions. For the cost of the slave cylinder it is worth changing if the engine has to come out.

Unfortunately they are all internal, there are no external versions. For the cost of the slave cylinder it is worth changing if the engine has to come out. There are a small number of M3W's with the external clutch slave cylinder. See page 20 of the Parts book for details. It looks like MX5 parts. Agree that the internal slave cylinder is worth replacing when the engine is out, they are fairly cheap, unless you buy a genuine Volvo or Morgan part.
