Thanks John, that is really interesting and quite different to my recollections as a 1951 child.

Probably being brought up in rural Norfolk on a small holding helped out a lot with the rationing side of things.

I can remember going to Norwich and hearing an American accent for the first time and being given the explanation as to why they were here post war, but that's it with regard to wartime hangovers.

Slightly off-thread Ian but have found the name of the manufacture of the LED 'mimics' at Great Malvern and will pm you.

Getting the front wheel of your bicycle stuck in the tram rail when going downhill, grazed knees resulting. When I joined up we were still using WWII grenades, a third of the buggers didn't go off, which caused much consternation.

There was a tramride from the Lickey Hills into Birmingham, through Selly Oak I think, that was better than any fairground roller coaster.

Must be good - It's next to the Lickey incline.

Our local.coal merchant was still using a horse and cart for deliveries in the early 1970s - my brother and I would be given a bucket if our Dad heard the cart round our estate and we would retrace the route to the coal yard picking up any pieces of coal from the road that had fallen off when the cart went round corners. We were also told to bring back any horse plop but somehow could never find any...

My Dad told us stories that when he was a similar age in London just after the War, he and his brother would go out at night with a borrowed fishmonger's barrow to 'find' the tar-impregnated wood paving blocks that were used in some areas of London and were being replaced with granite setts. These tar-blocks were prized as fuel in the Winter.

I think my kids have had it too easy...

When I were a very young lad my uncle used to take me to Cheltenham to see an army mate - they had fought in the desert together. On the return to Snowhill Station the train had to stop at the foot of the Lickey incline until we felt the thump of the banker engine get on the back. Then we started the ascent.

There are still tarred blocks under the roads in Sheffield, when they dig the road up, and the old tram rails.

The Lickey is still a challenge for Northbound units even now.

Lived in Twickenham. Saturday morning pictures were a must. A drink came with a straw in a sealed paper cover. Wait for the lights to go down, tear the top off the cover and shoot it by blowing up the straw towards the screen. Simple pleasures. Did anyone else get Jubley pains? A Jubley (?spelling) was a pyramid shaped block of frozen orange juice with a waxed cardboard cover. Snip one corner and suck on it hard. Pains in the back of your chest followed quickly. Jamboree Bags? A paper bag with pictures of boy scouts on it, sweets and treats inside. A sort of Kinder egg in a bag, with no chocolate!!! Politically incorrect sweets called Black Jack's with a picture of a go*ly w*g on the wrapper.
It was more than a mile walk, unaccompanied, to school everyday. If I set off home very slowly, I could jump on the back of the green grocers horse and cart as he returned from market and swing my legs all the way home. His shop was opposite our house and he kept his horse stabled in his backyard just like Steptoe. Different Times.

You can still get black jacks. I used to like the golliwog badges in Robertsons jam. Do you remember the golliwog money boxes were you put the money on his hands.
