I hired a van the other day to take a sofa to my sons. It had manual window winders !!! I was incendiary with rage, I tell you. It was just a wind-up.

I am merely relating my experience; which is that once Autopilot is selected by means of a switch on a stalk it is difficult to imagine the car ‘veering’ anywhere.
As long as light pressure is put on the steering wheel the car will remain in lane and at whatever multiple of car lengths behind the vehicle in front. If traffic speeds up, so does the car (within cruise control parameters). If traffic stops, so does the car. If you enter a reduced speed limit, the car will respond. If you want to cancel Autopilot, either flick the switch or dab the brake.
Blaming the Touch Screen is a red herring. Once Autopilot is engaged you can do what you like - look at the countryside, have a snack, engage in a phone conversation, read Miscellany..........
My guess is that this car ‘veered’ because he did not give the Autopilot time to switch in (it makes various checks before doing do) and the driver has lost control as a consequence.
But that does not suit the anti-Musk narrative.
Edit: I should add that I cannot recall ever fiddling with the Touch Screen UNLESS I was on Autopilot - is IS too complex to manage when driving under normal circumstances, let alone in the rain as in this case.
Edit 2: Just remembered. The windscreen wipers are set to ‘Automatic’ by default. They vary in speed as the volume of rain increases or decreases. This is all described in the article, so I don’t quite know what he was trying to ‘adjust manually’.

I hope I didn't offend you in any way. I have to say though (hoping again not to offend you) that everything you say in this post fills me with horror. The thought that a growing number of cars on our roads are routinely popped into autopilot while the driver tries to change the heat settings, wipers, radio, presumably seat adjustments, aircon....everything, in fact, and feels so confident in that, that reading a magazine could be possible. even in humour....and is happy with that., With a system that IS too complex to manage (in your own words)...wow. Just wow. I shall be more and more terrified as more and more get sold. Sorry to disagree with you so completely, but I think the philosophy and technology should be blamed if part of the normal usage involves using something"too complex" to use whilst keeping the driver's attention on driving. I completely agree with you Nick.
There are in fact some signs of common sense in the auto industry... a couple of 'real' knobs has emerged in a French avant-garde model... I've read...

Before this turns into the wrong direction...
The court argued against the driver from a behavioral law perspective.
Public opinion goes the other way round and questions touch controls for basic driving features.
One thing seems a bit dangerous to me.
Relying on the auto pilot is a suggestions you must not follow as the auto pilot is a level 2 system.
This means that the driver is responsible for everything the car does and the driver has to ready to step in in a spit second.
So you must not read the paper or do similar stupid things.
The auto pilot may do good in most situations. It definitely just hands over like the hot potato thrown to the driver when it reaches it´s limits or
switches to technical problem mode.+
So please do not get distracted going on auto pilot!

Court are in error you don't need to dive five menus deep to alter the wiper speed.
Tesla owners are pointing out the flaw in this arguement.
As with all cars drivers should RTFM
Either way the rain sensing wipers on my smart roadster are still working great after 27 years, I guess a tech giant like Tesla don't like admitng other manf had things right, and had to reinvent the wheel, stupid mistake on such a tech laden car!
