Decided to swap out the starter today after just getting a click on the starter button and had to bump start it. Started perfectly once back in the garage several times but has undermined confidence in the reliability of the motor. Will keep the old one as a spare and will learn how to change it just incase. Anyway I have removed the inside footwell cover which has given me access to remove the 2 holding bolts. So it’s effectively out - except it’s not! Anyone know the secret way to actually remove it? The starter solenoid stops it coming out the footwell and everything else stops it coming out the front. Do I remove the starter solenoid to get more room or do I remove the steering rack or is there a simple method. Any advise greatly fully received. It’s a later chassis from 2015. Many thanks Dave

When I had my engine out, I found it easier to put back in with the starter motor removed. The starter motor was then refitted from the front the two fixing bolts I was able to access from above. The steering rack was removed at this point in the proceedings.

So do I have to take the rack out? If I do do I have to remove the track rods from the suspension or can I get away with just unbolting the rack from the chassis?...
Manyt thanks

Whether you need to remove rack from where you are at I don't know.
Just unbolting the rack will not allow it to move much as the bell housing and chassis is in the way. To remove you need to undo steering column, track rod ends, 4 mounting bolts and also remove the chassis brackets. Then with a lot of fiddling and rotating you can withdraw it on the drivers side.

Steering rack removal is detailed in the engine removal instructions here: https://www.mtwc.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/MY-ENGINE-REMOVAL-PROCEDURE.pdf I found that the clue about the best position for the rack for actual removal was very useful, you could waste a lot of time without knowing that. Having never replaced just the starter motor, I cannot help with that. Please let us know what you found when it's all done.
