One of our elderly neighbours used to have one of those DAF Variomatics, boy was it noisy (the car), she used to give it the beans to set off up our steep road & it used to sound like it was about to explode

At Volvo Cars UK they were affectionately know as ‘Whizzers’ because of the noise. Clever stuff though.

Is there a dash cam that doesnt record your speed? I would hate to have a bump that was someone else's fault and lose out because I was doing 50 in a 40 limit Howard, if you're speeding it's probably a contributory factor. Thats rubbish. Speed alone does not cause accidents. If you can get through a gap at 5mph you can get through at 50mph. I well remember J Bonnington Jagsworth saying that in the Torygraph. Anyway, do I want to prove that my actions contributed? Of course not.

I get your sentiment re not wanting to necessarily implicate myself in something and may have considered the same in the past but the rest comes over as a very selfish viewpoint? On a track a 5-50mph gap dash is fair enough as the other drivers may well be expecting it. On a public road it is not down to if it is possible but if it is legal/safe and practical given the other users may not be Ferrari driver material? Judging a gap at a 5mph differential gives you a lot of time to adjust for their movement and wind/bumps/errors etc. Judging a gap with a 50mph differential would not give you the same human capable reaction time. More importantly if you judge wrong or they do a last minute change of mind without using their mirrors etc (which IMHO is more often the case than not) not only do you screw up your day but you screw up at least one other persons and at 50mph probably a couple of others due to the onward skittles effect? I actually don't think it is unreasonable for Her Majesty's to have access to webcams in the event of damage/injury. The roads are shared and there are learners and less confident drivers out there. That's before we get to swimming pool sized potholes and diesel spills. I am all for using the roads to best effect and may have possibly/allegedly/mistakenly exceeded the speed limit in recent times but unless I miss-read it and it was meant as humour that seems a bit iffy?
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

On a modern car they can download the ECU and find your speed at the time of the accident. Not just modern cars Ray The Volvo 850 in 1991 has Bosch SRS 2.2. It recorded impact speed, prior speed back as far as 3 min, was brake pedal active, brake pedal duration, brake pedal pressure, and the later 2.4 system also recorded steering angle input, speed and duration. ‘We’ used it in our crash research and development department in Torslanda, legislation prevented any one else gaining access and we were not the first to use it as it was ‘bought in’ technology. You must be younger than me if you dont remember J Bonnington Jagsworth in the Telegraph. A fictional character usewd to take the pi55 out of petrolheads. Bit like the way that the Pseuds in Private Eye lampooned the arty farties, or the Perriers - an every day tale of smug barstewards. I'm surprised you took me seriously - my wife never does. But no I dont want to aid plod to label some accident as speed related just because I am over the limit and that is all too likely to happen if they can easily just access the camera data. Highly unlikely they will / can interrogate the cars ECU unless the accident is very serious. Even then, from personal experience, their investigation is very limited and their judgement wore prejudice than anything scientific

A friend of my son's was involved in a head on about a year ago, with a girl who was texting whilst driving. No injuries thankfully as low speeds in a country lane, but he was prosecuted as well due to ignoring a dash warning light for an ABS fault for the previous 3 months! All identified by the ECU when interrogated by the police for speed and impact data as per Colin's post. No sympathy at all, dingbat.
How soon before ECU's start reporting our infringements in real time?

Oh Howard you are so wrong, in the event of a serious or life threatening or worse RTC everything is interrogated ECU, the hidden trackers as fitted in high value cars not to mention mobile phones with GPS. You would be very surprised at the depths we go too. Hope you never have to find out.

People don't like being told what to do. You can see this clearly now with mask wearers, which in our local town is no more than 10%
If we chose to exceed the speed limit and there are consequences, then it seems many people will shy away from the honourable thing and "lie"
Watch any motorway cop programme to see this almost every stop.
And people lying about who was driving to dodge the points.
Dashcams make a difference, and I should use mine more.
