Does anyone get a crashing sound from the engine when attempting to start? Sometimes get this sound and sometimes a backfire when starting. Once started it runs great??

Take a video with the sound on as close to the engine as possible and share it.

Lance, what year is your M3W and do you know if it has the Harley type compensator or the newer Centa type compensator?

Mine is a 2016 with the center compensator. Runs fine once started

Just noticed this thread, mine does something similar, my guess is that it is the easy start decompressor mechanism not quite staying open long enough for the engine to start. Feels a bit like a good old fashioned kick back when starting a bike, the sort that breaks ankles/catapults the rider over the bars when it happens on the kick start.

Is this an issue or something that has to be adjusted??

I honestly don't know for sure but I've lived with it for nearly eight years now... laugh

There is nothing to be adjusted with the easy start (compression release) cams, as they have a simple pivoting mechanism deactivated by centrifugal force once the engine fires and is above about 500rpm.

My car has the same undesirable characteristics on start, but you can hear the compression "leak" afforded by the easy start cams so they are working. I can't imagine how hard it would be to start one of these engines without the easy start feature.

I'm looking at upgrading to the 569 cams (which also have the easy start feature) not so much for performance, but more for the higher overlap they have which can only ease starting.
