Lost drive whilst enthusiastically pulling away from a junction whilst changing gear.
Thought it might have been the clutch, or chain jumped off, but then wouldn't start, so now fear a broken crank or flywheel come loose. The starter spins & turns the transmission but not the engine

Failed Centa drive rubbers most likely, engine out job to replace unless you have the Phil Bleazey conversion which allows you to change hem in situ.
The Centa compensator is between the clutch and the engine, so failure would produce the symptoms you are seeing.

Yes, sounds like your Centa rubber failed - out of interest - How many miles on the clock?

Does Centa issue explain the 'wont start' problem?

Does Centa issue explain the 'wont start' problem? Without a Centa the flywheel ring gear cannot turn the engine because the Centa is between the flywheel and the engine. It would make a whirring noise and do nothing to the engine.

Yes. the Centa is between the engine and the flywheel/starter. So a failed Centa will see the flywheel spinning but not the engine.

I am the brother of the original poster, and look after the car for him. OK, so it looks like the engine is coming off. Just to confirm, if i put the car in gear, and try to start the engine, it has drive, and jolts forwards, but in neutral, it just spins up with a whiring noise as someone above described. I am sure the answer is yes. Where do i buy the Centa coupling ?from?
Car has done 7000 miles. That's a lot of smiles.

Hi Tip Top Man. Thanks for the info - 7000 miles is about average for a set of rubbers. If there is a hole in the bell housing behind and underneath the engine look for bits of broken black rubber to confirm the diagnosis but I think it is a certainty that the rollers are shredded. You do not need the whole Centa coupling just a set of rubber rollers from any Morgan dealer. This will help with engine removal = https://youtu.be/gkGU1_xVjF0Good luck, Phil

You may have some difficulty getting the Centa rollers unless your dealer/supplier has stock on their shelf. Morgan didn't have any stock recently and there was no forecast for supply. Phil does some poly inserts......... although theses are usually installed as part of his Centa mods. Phil also did a very useful set of engine removal and refit instructions https://www.mtwc.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/MY-ENGINE-REMOVAL-PROCEDURE.pdf. Handy to refer to as it sounds like you haven't done this job before.

So the starter motor is driving through the flywheel, clutch and gear box then. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2020/08/21/Screenshot-2020-08-21-at-12.14.12.png) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2020/08/21/Screenshot-2020-08-21-at-12.25.18.png)
