Although of Yorkshire persuation and going to a state school where cricket was played ( but I was not in with the sporty group so never got picked to play for any teams)- I must admit that I do not understand the game and would probably find more entertainment in watching paint dry. Although perhaps it is marginally better than watching golf.

You may or may not be able to see the ball he’s trying to wack They wack it Cut to a cameraman filming sky. The ball is invisible. Cut to camerawomen filming grass, ball still invisible Repeat until ball is on the green. Watch 2 putts Repeat 18 times You watch golf, 76.78% of the time you are watching players and bag carriers out for a stroll, views of the sky, views of grass.

Cricket is lost on me, I wasn’t brought up in Yorkshire and wasn’t posh enough to go to a school that played cricket, football and rugby in the winter athletics in the summer. Used the same kit for all three.
I can watch 20/20 because something is always happening, don’t get me wrong I have tried. I went to a county game, second or third day I think, the spectators were outnumbered by seagulls and pigeons most of whom were knitting or reading a paper (the people not the birds) some were asleep all of whom only stirred when someone actually watching clapped at which point they joined in, not knowing why they were clapping as they missed it
More like care in the community.
Please don’t get me going on how a game can last for 5 days and still be a draw let alone the fact that at any juncture the two captains can get together and go “shall we call it a draw and go home”
I suppose having watched Geoff Boycott bat when cricket was on BBC 2 didn’t help, batting for 2 days and scoring 37 runs.
It’s more stop start than American football and only the English could invent a game that in addition to all that, stops for morning tea, a nice lunch and afternoon snacks yet when our nations default weather conditions arrive, overcast or rain, they all leg it indoors.
I was in a very similar state of mind about cricket apart from listening to the radio commentary when the characters were on. Then a Morgan owning pal, as a thank you for work done on his car, took me with him to Edgbaston for day 3 of a test match between England and Australia, within an hour I was hooked. Amazing atmosphere, great entertainment (on and off the pitch) all day food and drink. The following year it was the test against Pakistan and the following year the West Indies (order may be scrambled ;-)) After that I became a member and had a wonderful time in the members lounge where it’s very relaxed and comfortable on a cold spring morning! Medical then Covid stopped the fun but I have spent many hours over recent weeks with the Test series on the laptop (drives SWMBO crazy) with headphones so all good. It’s a beautiful game and so much more comfortable that the 20 years I spent freezing watching our son play Rugby all over the country BR Colin

Reminds me of an explanation of the game of cricket to our USA cousins:
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
Each man that’s in the side that’s in the field goes out and when he’s out comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.
When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out.
Sometimes there are men still in and not out.
There are men called umpires who stay out all the time, and they decide when the men who are in are out.
Depending on the weather and the light, the umpires can also send everybody in, no matter whether they’re in or out.
When both sides have been in and all the men are out (including those who are not out), then the game is finished.

I went to Llanelli Grammar. Sport was high on the list but.... Rugby or cross country in winter and cricket or athletics in summer. I played rugby and cricket. I enjoyed cricket until a motorbike crash that injured my wrists and cost me a schools county cap. GRRR. In my anger I stopped playing for years. I do, however, enjoy watching most cricket for the intricacies of bowler versus batsman. Each trying to dominate and the variations they were trying. I used to watch tests on tv with sound off and listen to the radio commentary. It was belly laughing stuff quite often with Johners and Agnew. I went back to play after several years and enjoyed it again. Playing in the same team as my son, when he got his first 100 was awesome. In the changing room before the match I pepped him up by saying it was about time he got a big score....” get a ton today and I will dye my hair blonde” was mentioned. I didn’t as he reminded me of what  ‘s reaction would have been

Went to a very 'crickety' school. Tim Curtis, Cedric Boynes and Phill Newport all taught there. Martin Horton was our coach. Dean Headley was there at the same time as me, as was Paul Fearnley (his Dad was quite famous).Imran Khan was there before. Numerous others.
I played Rugby, badly, and have zero interest in cricket.

Sir, You have no soul, please return your passport to the nearest office and carry on with watching football which only requires an attention span of an hour and a half. ( in jest of course !! )

You went to the same school that I did, but I was a contemporary of Imran Khan. A.fellow OE. Must be.something about the 1972 4/4.  Tim Duncan (son of Mike) was a contemporary of mine.

I'm always amused when someone who professes to enjoy football says that cricket is boring because nothing happens.
