That "modern" concept of ecclesiastic architecture is an abomination. The least the designers could have done was to stay in keeping with the surrounding buildings. Oh, but perhaps in their divine inspiration, the resemblance to some type of space vehicle was intentional. Then the faithful will be enlightened with the promise of a rocket ride into heaven, albeit in a more modern style than we appreciate with the masters in oil and canvas. The more meritorious ones would be allowed into the pinnacle capsule, thus reaching their destination before the other, less sanctifiable ones. Levels of monetary tithing could be marketed in order to reach the higher positions faster.
I would add that the crowning touch to the whole Deus ex Machina would be to blow incense smoke out the bottom of the structure during special periods in the services, thus indicating to all that something special was about to happen, possibly even ascension.
The above is not offered as sacrilegious smack, but rather as a progressive concept for the established clergy to attract the ever-dwindling ranks of young heretics, who, in their Googled sophism, no longer are inclined to believe the tenets spoon-fed to them by their elders.

Personally I like it, & having been involved in architecture & commercial construction for almost 50 years feel if someone doesn't push the boundaries of design & engineering we'd still be living in mud huts or caves

I had forgotten that the church was built away from the historical part of the city. Modern architecture was always prominent in Italy.
From passing by I do remember it was an impressive building.

Interesting comments on the photograph of the Church Madonna Della Lacrimal in Syracuse. OK, hands up, I am an architect, albeit retired now, and have no experience in the eclesiastical field of design so I may be biased in my views. However, the drivers of church and cathedral design have always tried to inspire congregations by building edifices that were not part of the local vernacular and were set up to impress, particularly in respect of the height of their spires or towers or, in the case of Italy, the scale and scope of their interior ornamentation. This has always been part of their attraction. The building formed around a central altar is similar in many ways to the new cathedrals in the UK at, for instance Liverpool and Bristol (Clifton) but the aim was to create a structure that reached to the heavens in the way that the spires of old did.
I have a funny feeling that as these concepts seem rather at odds with a proportion of the current population they will gather greater interest as time goes on and religious concepts evolve but I am sure that the more faithful will correct me in this.

Aside from the bother of an exhaust being on the point of dropping off, this morning was a fine experience of Sicilian Baroque architecture at its best. I had not realised that the sprouting of this extravagant style was prompted by an earthquake in 1693 that devastated the eastern part of the island.
