According to the Finance Leasing Association 91% of privately purchased cars were done on a finance agreement in 2019 and presumably an even higher amount for business purchases. Assuming that they load the car price by £1500, this will equate to an additional cost of about £45 per month on a 36 month contract.

I suspect most people will react to this by simply extending the contract duration by a couple of months to maintain their monthly outgoing as opposed to being driven away from fossil fuels.

When you combine the above with the impact of Covid which I suspect has seen a lot of peoples mileages reduce, I suspect the combination of a £1500 price hike and reduced mileages will simply slow down new car sales and hence government VAT revenue.

When I can purchase a hydrogen fuel cell powered EV, I'll change.

I have issues lugging 500 to 700 kg or battery about.
OK, electric motors are lighter than a BMW N62, at 350 kg including transmission.
But 55L of petrol weighs only 41kg, plus the tank, say 50kg.
55L of petrol holds the same potential energy as a 500kg battery.

BEVs make no sense to me.

Me too EV on batteries only will prove to be a costly misadventure environmentally IMHO.

Perhaps somebody could build a nice little 3 wheeler that uses the same technology

Deposits were paid and had to be refunded by a few on here.
There was a good market for them so why they didn't find an alternative powertrain supplier is anyone's guess

FCEV would seem to be the way to go certainly for heavier & commercial vehicles. There are only 13 hydrogen filling stations in UK, Aberdeen has two stations the first was around 5 years ago for hydrogen fuel buses.

I see that a team from ZeroCarbon World have just driven a Tesla 3 from Jon O'Groats to Land's End. 15h 46m overall, including 1h 31m 32s of charging. But sure, EVs are no good for long distances...

On 7 October 2015, Jeff Allan and his son, Ben Cottam-Allan, beat the electric car record in a Tesla Model S completing the northbound route in 19 hours 45 minutes and the southbound route in 18 hours 53 minutes.

Google list the route as being 837 miles and taking 14 hours 40 minutes.

Morgan should have a word with Lucid, they have fantastically small power trains.

Would you like to try that in the Mini-eeeeeee or the new Honda eeee-cute-thingy. The 3 does have the benefit of high battery capacity, Tesla infrastructure etc.

I joke but you are right that it is quite possible with something like a Tesla and some of the new cars coming out to make long journeys with a bit of planning. Its a bit like the old days when you would send off for an AA route plan prior to going on holiday. I remember dad doing this and me being the navigator (from the back) which made the trip more fun.

For me the most telling thing is that Shooter has had a string of them and he (used to) do the mileage.
