We got these from my father in law, took them to a dealer who offered a few quid so decided to keep them for the kids/grandkids.

The kids/grandkids won’t want them. Better to give them to a charity shop, and do some good .

Not all children/grandchildren are the same, our three treasure the few bits and pieces they chose from theirs and the memories that accompany them are good one's.

Like wise we have some treasured bits and pieces that will be handed down like my Fathers wartime Flying Logbook, it is priceless.

Plus, they may be at a point in their lives that they're not interested now .... but it's surprising the number of people I know who hit a certain age and get interested in their 'roots' .... family history, heirlooms .... another 50 years and even quite normal stuff to us will seem incomprehensibly odd and quirky to them .... biggest problem is the mobility and lack of storage in the lives of most younger people makes the practicalities difficult.

Quickly dragged a few oddities off shelves for a pic ..... this is a potentially really interesting thread .... too good to succumb to drift so young.

Couple here I know little about so, who knows, the assembled wisdom may prove useful.

They are:

Slightly disturbing figure (possibly charm/fetish) made from a vertebrae of a horse(or similar sized creature.)

Blue candle snuffer ... dug up in my garden when I lived in Yorkshire

Old Microscope

Flint Knapping stone ... found with the previous arrow heads and was the tool used to chip away and make them.

Unknown bronze thing .... looks oriental (Chinese?) .... guess it's an incense burner (tho did for a while think it might be a sand-shaker they used before blotting paper ... but who knows)

As you can see I'm more intrigued by the curious rather than expensive antiques

I agree with you. I've just taken stewardship of my Dad's family archives from my Aunt, a retired history teacher who has just moved to a dramatically smaller house. It comprises about two filing cabinets of documents, photographs and so on, going back about 150 years. I've had a little trawl through it. It's so fascinating, and easy to get sidetracked once one starts reading things.

My plan is to start by scanning it all. It will give me a good idea of what's there, and will then make an accessible record for any other family members who in the years to come take an interested in family history. I need to get on while my Dad and Aunt are still around and lucid, so that they can answer any questions I come up with.

Having done extensive genealogy research on my own family I believe the first rule is that 99% of what family tell you will be wrong! The second is to be prepared for a few skeletons to come out of cupboards. Usually involving the most prim & proper great aunts that you were scared of when you were little.

For example my grandfather was one of 8 according to my mum but I can prove there were at least another 4 siblings that Ive traced that died in childhood all living in a 2 up 2 down.

The most important thing while people are still alive is to match names to faces in any photos you may have.

You might get lucky as we did on one branch of the wifes side of the family, I have photos of oil paintings of our children's 9x great grandparents & can get back to about 1300ad, but found the hardest bit was anything more recent than 1901 although the 1911 census will be released for public consumption next year which will assist.

Not an antique as such, but a bit of motoring history from the earliest days of motoring - an early speeding ticket! - what my great grandfather, who lived near Edinburgh, was doing in Yorkshire, terrifying the local squire by roaring past him at the horrendous speed of 12 mph on the public highway, we have no idea! Have tried to find out more about the outcome of his case in the York courts, but all those records were lost during the war, so we are none the wiser!
