It seems to me that what this shows is that however educated, intelligent, responsible etc. we are, we all hear the advice and rules differently and so act differently from each other, with our own personal set of justifications.
There's no actual, real connection between the total behaviour of a population and the attempts of a government to halt the virus.
We all decide to take certain risks, risks that are both to ourselves and to everyone else.
No way out then?
Nick These are the Government laws that we are following to the letter. I appreciate that some may want me and my fellow teachers to live in a box, and only leave our houses for work, but I'm afraid that, unless the rules are changed, we're going to continue to try and grab a shred of pleasure for 40 mins every Saturday morning. If we develop any symptoms, we will also follow the Gov laws with regard to isolation and testing. When seeing friends and family you do not live with you should:
meet in groups of 6 or less
follow social distancing rules when you meet up
limit how many different people you see socially over a short period of time
meet people outdoors where practical: meeting people outdoors is safer than meeting people indoors because fresh air provides better ventilation

Has smoking stunted their growth?  At 15 I was the same height I am now (5'10) although my knees worked better back then....and my back....and I had more hair..... These are humunculi! My tallest Yr11 is 6ft 8

I have no bloody idea what that solution is and I'm sad to say neither do the medical professionals or the Government or any Politician for that matter it appears to me anyway.
What I genuinely can't understand is why we don't simply do what other similar countries have done. It's clear that the strategies we have employed up to now have done markedly less well than similar countries both in terms of death avoidance and in avoidance of economic damage. If we don't know what to do, why don't we copy those that do?

So does your last paragraph make you even slightly concerned? Will you be staying away from the cafe this week?
Nick By that reasoning, surely my priority would be staying away from school and self isolating for two weeks? Why? If I am putting my 5 friends at risk when we are maintaining proper social distancing and have a decent hygiene regime, then the 100's of kids/staff I encounter every day, without a scrap of any of these precautions, are at far more at risk, and the number of people I could infect is exponentially higher? So you are saying that 6 mates can meet in a cafe and stay 2m away from each other? You weren't clear about that. Could it be that the risk to the kids at school is forced on you by gov but the risk to your friends is voluntary? Please don't think I'm begrudging your small pleasure, I think I'm just saying that we all take risks, we just decide which ones to take individually. The loonies who have a rave in the park at 11pm just have a different perspective on the risks don't they? I heard a teenager say "so what if a few old people die, it's time they moved over"(!) and from her point of view that was a valid response...... For my living I make house visits. Most people's reaction when they ask me to call and I say I'm not doing house calls at the moment, is "but we are covid free here" which means that they interpret my action ( or lack of) as self preservation on my part. When I point out to them that I could infect them if I'd caught it yesterday and didn't know yet, that I'm sacrificing my income for their benefit, it comes as a surprise to them to look at it from that point of view. You weren't clear about that. 1 metre indoors as long as " rooms are well ventilated by keeping windows and doors open" (GOV.UK) Could it be that the risk to the kids at school is forced on you by gov but the risk to your friends is voluntary? So what you're saying is that it's OK for the Gov to put me at serious risk, but I'm not allowed to make a personal decision about the slight risk posed to me by my friends? Probably the most dangerous aspect of our breakfast is the bike ride to and from the cafe. Two weeks ago, one of our number swapped his motorbike for a bicycle, and got smashed up by a car driver doing a sudden U turn in the road.....

And that's a laudible position, but the vast majority of the population are not in a financial position to turn down work. I am also very aware that without us teachers going back into school, hundreds of thousands of people would not be able to return to the workplace, with catastrophic results for our economy. It is one of the reasons I decided to return to the 'petri dish' and not kick off about the danger to my health (although I still retain the right to moan about it )

No, I was saying one is out of your control but one is a choice. And that we all choose the risks we take. It's not a criticism, I'm alluding to the fact that we all do take some risks and we consider those OK but we don't take into account that when other people take their risks, they too think theirs are OK.
Anyway, I repeat, I'm not criticising your decisions nor anyone else's so I'll shut up about it now.

TBM, for what it is worth I have huge sympathy for your situation, which I suspect is one of the highest risk environments to work in. You have no ability to impose any genuine degree of social distancing and there is no option to impose any form of PPE. The mortality risk for the kids may be statistically low, but this does not apply to the staff.
Up until September my wife worked at a special needs school, but following a recent round of "management of change" otherwise known as work more hours and we will pay you less she concluded that there is more to life than being treated badly whilst working in a high risk environment. I suspect she will not be alone.
