I think I have a new Covid 19 symptom....hair loss. When I see and hear the statistics being bandied about my hands go to my head to pull my hair out. There is no consistency in data gathering, analysis, reporting. I call them Politicians numbers not statistics as a result. As test numbers increase so are positive results. By simply stating numbers of cases instead of rationalising them to numbers of tests then comparisons of now versus 3 months ago are false. It’s a bit like comparing apples to pears and potatoes. Even deaths due to Covid figures are nebulous based on people who test positive but die within 30 days of a non related cause were logged as Covid deaths. I did some work for Mori, the radio listening and ratings survey was one I did. We had strict rules about choice of interviewees so no bias was introduced. When I was doing research or evaluations as a Metallurgist great care was taken in design of tests and data gathering to get credible results. In my 4/4 I was getting about 35 mpg. In my Plus8 I get 30mpg. Why the difference? Both are Morgans after all. So, is my 4/4 the better car? Should I have been thrashing it to get it to match the Plus8? We are in for a long haul with Covid. It will not be completely eradicated unless it mutates to Covid 20. We are going to have to learn to live with it. At some stage a decision will need to be made on treating it like we do with Flu, Measles etc. A vaccine would help as with flu/MMR. It is going to take a strong will to accept it and live with it.

BBC headline.. "Scottish university students told not to go to pubs"Now I might be a wee bit old fashioned, but how in God's name do the authorities expect thousands of 18 year old's enjoying their first taste of parental freedom to comply

They'll be fine though won't they, with the new App, since they'll all have newish phones (5 years old or less). Surely no student would be seen dead with an old brick of a device!? So long as they input their current postcode, not their home one, or should they? All very confusing, am I where I live, where my home is, or where I work!!?? And presumably I've only been close to someone who has had covid, if they input that they have! May as well whistle down the wind.. Ultimately, be safe as you can and stay well everyone 🤞.

This week there have been expert comments on herd immunity, and one view is that this can't be achieved simply by natural infection of the population.
So a vaccine, which builds confidence, appears to be the only exit strategy. Even with a vaccine I can't see momentum building for some years after initial deployment. It's important to retain a degree of circumspection when reading stuff about so-called 'herd immunity'. Much of it is being pushed by people with less than pure motives. https://bylinetimes.com/2020/09/23/...groups-reviving-herd-immunity-in-the-uk/

We had a call from a friend in Isreal last night. He works almost by himself for a small company that specialises in rectification work on shafts and gears for huge pieces of machinery so social distancing at work is not a problem.
He was sounding quite depressed and told us that Isreal has gone back into total lockdown. He is one of those people who has little interests outside of work or his motorcycle so lockdown is his idea of hell.

It really is random though isn't it. I've just learned my neice has picked up Covid 19 after settling into her shared student house in Oxford. Before she was notified that her housemate had tested positive, she had returned home visiting her mum and dad. The latter had tested positive that he had already had C19 around March, in May. My sister tested negative at that time inspite of close contact. My brother in law`s a multiple Stent patient, and mum's a lifelong asthmatic. They're still waiting for their 72hr test result, having been tested Tuesday morning. None of the involved parties are reckless or careless people.

An interesting comment from a statistician.
Back in March-May the volume of testing in the UK was small, only people in hospital or health care workers were able to access tests. But we have no idea what rate of positive tests there were, expressed as a percentage of both tests completed, hospital admissions and deaths. Now in September the number of tests undertaken is enormously greater, but still we don't know the rate of positive tests there were, expressed as a percentage of both tests completed, hospital admissions and deaths. All we see are more positive cases, and unclear indications that hospital cases are not increasing as the experts predicted. The report from the independent statistician suggested that if the volume of testing in March-May was at the same level as today we would have seen over 100,000 positive cases per day. At the moment it is less than 5000, which is why, I believe, why the sickness and death rate isn't increasing at the rate that "Doomster Hancock" was predicting.
Another scientist has commented that the virus is evolving so that it can more efficiently infect us, but doesn't kill us. That is natural selection: I expect that the 3rd wave in the spring, coupled with a vaccine, will be of no real consequence. COVID 19 will end up like flu, annually culling the old and the frail, but leaving the healthy only slightly unwell. Remember, in the UK winter Flu kills 10,000 to 15,000 every year.

Quoted today (Possibly from a Right Wing source?) Current recover rate from Covid is 99.8%, Flu is 99.9% and as with all respiratory diseases they sometimes have serious after effects. Hopefully the recent cases do not result in an increase in deaths like we saw earlier in the year, soon see in about two weeks or so...
