I once helped sift CVs for a client who had advertised for a marketing assistant. One of them was from a person with a 2:1 in English from Nottingham University. In their personal statement, they said that they enjoyed writing and that they had excellent attention to detail. The first page of their CV had 5 basic spelling or grammatical errors. They didn't get an interview.

Hooray - and not just with Morgans - the plural of wife is wives - I'll NOT go on laugh2

George, I'd forgotten that poem - brilliant! thumbs

Incidentally, I've just completed a job application sift for a role my department is advertising. My selection criteria? Automatic rejection for a spelling or grammar mistake. Out of 100 application forms received, I narrowed it down to a short list of 3 almost immediately.

If you only had one, wasn't it a criterion?

English spelling and grammar are fluid, and have ever been so. At any point the "rules" reflect the accepted custom and practice of the day. You only have to go back and read the writings of Shakespeare, Chaucer and more recently, PG Woodhouse to see the evolution of our language.
Many other countries, including most European states, have Government departments that pontificate on and rule on the use of their language, with less and less effect.
It is my belief that because English is owned by its users it is the most common second language and a major first language. OK, some of the way English us used by people from other countries may make some of us uncomfortable, but rejecting a job candidate because of their use of English could be seen by the ever more sensitive Woke generation as being racist!

It’s all right for you lot, but my daughter has an irritating habit of correcting my grammar.
She runs her own business, as an academic editor!
scared

She can say the word ‘Dad’ in a way that makes me feel that I’m about to get sent out of the class!
Love her to bits though.

If that job involves writing publicity material for a firm, content which in practical terms ends up forming part of a sales contract then poor English is a very sound reason for rejecting a candidate. Poor use of English creates ambiguity. Ambiguity is expensive. Very expensive at times.
