I have LED rear bulbs, and also LED numberplate bulbs. Also two rear red reflectors and an LED fog light. I'm pretty comfortable with my rear visibility,
The only time my B/W plates have been an issue was leaving a car park in Stratford that used Numberplate recognition technology. It wouldn't recognise my plates and couldn't get the barrier to open!

There's quite a lot of debate on the internet as to whether ANPR cameras can recognise black & white plates. I read up on this for 'a friend' who has them and found this comment interesting mainly because It would seem ANPR technology differs between those using it and I would expect that the technology is also changing as time goes on. I can confirm the following (ALL COMMENTS MADE WITHOUT PREJUDICE!) 1/ Car parks operated by N.C.P. that use ANPR to capture details do NOT read black and silver number plates and no fine is raised. 2/ The Dartford Crossing system DOES read black and sliver number plates, but does so manually, not automatically. As a result one receives a (vaguely!) personalised letter explaining this. As a result, I was asked to pay only the £2.50 charge, not a fine. 3/ Local authority car parks do NOT read black and sliver number plates, although local authority systems may vary and this knowledge only refers to those car parks where I have parked. 4/ I cannot comment on the ability (or lack thereof!) of Police A.N.P.R. systems to read these plates. However, I did recently drive through an area where the Police were carrying out an operation to catch untaxed and uninsured vehicles; as I drove towards the officer, dressed in his hi-vis jacket, he simply waved me on, without looking at his computer screen! What this means in terms of identification via the number plate I can't comment on.....

I was considering replacing my front plate with an air intake for extra rad cooling and putting a stick on “plate” on the front wing. I know others have done so without problems. Trying an alternative air intake instead at the moment. I seem t9 remember E-types having some sort of exemption with their bonnet plates but unsure about other cars. DVLA site might have info ( possibly confusing!!!!!).

ANPR cameras do not read black and white/silver plates, speed cameras use a completely different system and do read black and white/silver. I regularly operate ANPR cameras.

I know it's illegal not to have visible plates but wonder how well speed recognition cameras cope given the tractor strewn muddy rural roads of Norfolk mid winter. Many motorists in our village offer the most minimal effort to comply if at all, often just picking out a few letters with their fingers

I was of a similar opinion. Black and silver plates certainly have a visual appeal. My opinion changed when following a fellow Morgan owner, on a dark, rainy night. All was OK on a single carriageway, however on a busy dual carriageway, the Morgan in front became nearly invisible, amongst the spray and lights of the traffic. On arriving home, the black and silver plates were consigned to the garage wall and the modern plates refitted. My 4/4 has remained like that ever since. Bud 4/4 - Stanley

I am with you bud. They exist for safety reasons, so why increase your risk.

If I was risk averse I wouldn't ride bikes and almost certainly wouldn't come to work
