Right here at Kemble is where the second one went yesterday.

The Arrows were based there at one time.

The other one went to St Athan which is where the BA service base is located.

Such a sad day. I love the top deck of a jumbo.

Yes, special memories for us flying out to South Africa in 1973 to start married life, we have still got the SAA pin badges.
Back in the days when we all wore a suit to travel in and it was all very civilised, we were very lucky.

John, I shed a metaphorical tear at the news.
The upper deck of a 747-400 was like being in a small executive jet. Only 40 or so people, 2 cabin staff, two loos.. peace and quiet.
One was made to feel special!

Who would want 1st?

When in uni we went to St Athan to see the Vulcan servicing schedule. No Vulcan there but the computer print out of the crtical path based schedule used a small tree for the paper print out! When we got there they had gone into an alert. Bikini alert I think. A WAF was our driver in a minibus. Manual but I think she didn’t know what the clutch pedal was for! Crash changes every time. The workshops were spotless.
As for the 747.....our last flight in one was in 2002. SA Airways Heathrow to Cape Town. Best flight we have had. The first time in a747 it seemed huge inside compared to a “normal” plane.

I remember the first time I taxied out behind a 747 in a Cessna Citation at Zurich and being awed at the sheer size of it and hoping the wake turbulence wouldn't get me It was like being behind a tower block !!!

I shall never forget catching a 747-400 from Cape Town airport, we walked out from the terminal building and up the front steps, the flippin' thing was absolutely ginormous.

Top deck on BA was a nice place to be sure enough, but after I switched to Virgin Upper Class the pointy bit at the front was a proper slice of luxury. I'll never forget the experience when I flew to Newark the day after the Ladbroke Grove train crash. I was still a bit bruised and battered, and the aircrew totally pampered me, I must have had every massage and treat known to man on that flight. cloud9
