There is also a plastic T piece on the hose from the expansion tank & to the heater. They get brittle so I replaced mine with an ali one from Simon of SiFab

Hi Dave W, I think that rules out a split hose, as the temp gauge went close to nearly the maximum. I've had a feel around as best I can and can't find a split. The thermostat housing has evidence of leakage. After filling it with water yesterday, it was running at a normal temperature, until going sky high again. Steam escaped first and second time, but when topping it up a second time water was dropping out quite quickly from somewhere. Gonna top up again for some clues.

Been digging around and found out I have a cracked thermostat housing. I think this may have been caused by the sudden on rush of cool water being put into the expansion tank, although it was left for a good 20mins. From evidence around the adjoining clips, it looks like there may have been a leak from here before, to I'm hoping that once I replace this, and remove excess oil that I topped up to sort out the oil pressure issue, then I'll be a happy bunny. Any advice in which housing I need to buy for 2004 roadster?

Yeah, thank you for all your advice. Any advice on fitting the damn thing when I get one. I have tried to remove some of the hoses but some have clips that you pinch, in a seemingly inaccessible location. If the clips where all facing towards me it would be a lot easier. There really isn't much room where it is fitted.

The clips are all fitted when the engine is dressed before it goes in the car

Some hose pipe clips are tightened/loosened by slotted screws that may also have 8mm heads which allow use of a socket, spanner or bladed screwdriver, an 8mm spanner may be small enough to allow accces into tight places. There is also a possibility that a flexible socket drive might provide access similar to the one in the link..?

I favour an 8mm (or 6mm for smaller hose clips) ring spanner, but be aware of the extra torque you can get on the clip drive. A ¼" square drive socket can work as well if there's clearance. A smear of grease on the clip drive helps as well and saves corrosion long term.

A couple of the clips have screw heads but the awkwardly placed clips have the ones you need to squeeze with pliars. It's all frustrating 😤

Just snip or Dremel them off, then use new when you reassemble & you can position them to be accessible for re-tightening
