Any definition that excludes a Porsche. 😱

It’s hard enough for people to define a “classic” let alone a sports car too

For me the first rule relative to defining that which may be described as a sports car, is that there should be no rules.

As ever it seems we may be into a bit of thread drift... (-:

Heinz, I watched both Ferrari vids, and that which came across was that Ferrari`s have become a form of currency just as so many classics have over time. Pity the poor unfortunate 308 owner, as it seems his membership of the club is somewhat lesser valued by the glitterati..

I suspect it matters not a jot whether we are looking at a £300 rusted out MG Midget £30k Morgan or a £30mil Ferrari, that which is interesting to ME is that which the owner values in the car, and may be prepared to share with those who have interest.

I have been very fortunate to have met quite a few real car enthusiasts in my time, from the impoverished to the wealthy, and I have enjoyed their company greatly. I suspect the majority of my time in the early years was spent with the grubby hand brigade who like myself were bringing old rusted low value relics back to life in order to have access to some sports car fun. At the other end of the scale and some years back, I was chatting with a mature chap who had a collection of cars and asked him which in his collection was his favourite, a rather embarrassing question to ask, but how else to you ever get to understand how others evaluate the "worth" of their machines..? I was grateful that he took the time to consider how best to answer. He declared that he had no favourites, but for him to think he might care to enjoy a drive in his Ferrari he would phone his mechanic who would then place a heater under the sump to warm the oil, then fire it up to check all was well, before he would then enjoy a run out in the car. With a pause for thought, he then said in a bid to answer your question, the keys that live in the bowl on the hat stand in the hallway are those of my 911 ( a 72 2.7 RSL) and if I feel the need to blow the cobwebs away, I just jump in turn the key and GO..

Interesting that even in this thread the ubiquitous 911 comes to the surface...

On the other hand a wealthy American acquaintance (of German heritage) who seems to prefer Lamborghini, has a Porsche 928 which he keeps in pristine condition, and being rather daring. he takes part in some crazy closed desert road timed event in the US in which he runs his full race Viper, which he crashed heavily, and rather than buy another, he had it repaired to be as good as new, I guess he may have had an affinity with the car perhaps as the result of the events they had competed in together, thus that damaged Dodge had more value to him than buying a replacement..?

Trying to get back on track, pun intended Does a dodge Viper not qualify as a sports car...?

If you check the OED, the definition of Classic doesn't match a lot of so called "classic " cars. I'm very much in Rich's camp, if it makes you smile and floats your boat then that's all trhat is required.

My first real car and the car I learnt to drive in was a Honda S800 coupe, they were really amazing cars not that reliable but could rev to about 8-9k rpm........very much in vogue again and going for ridiculously serious money if you can find a good one without rust.

That did make me smile, obviously if reliability, ease of use, requiring little or no special treatment and can use day to day in all traffic conditions is to be eliminated from a classic car requirement criteria then your ascertain may hold true........but I like my classic cars eg after weeks and months of inactivity, to simply turn the key and go, I do agree not all Porsche's qualify.

Well when I was a nipper I’m pretty sure a Classic was something special, something that broke the mould

Viper, and therein lies the problem although it doesn't really bother me as I have long since stopped going to shows where you sit by your pride and joy ( and the car ) awaiting the usual raft of rivet counters to come along and tell you what is wrong with your car.
The usual response was " Sex and Travel mate"
