Well for me the classic old school Aston Martin has always Been held in higher regard Than say a Jensen Interceptor because it had its own power plant.

For me now the Aston has lost its soul, I think it’s a backward step.

Not happy

Not totally fair.

Tobias Moers is not from MB HQ (not a totally bad thing given their success and reputation?) but from AMG in Affalterbach a small town that is gradually being consumed by the vastly expanding factory and employment that the success of AMG has provided? I don't think you could say that AMG has ever been relaxed, SLS, G63, A45s, Black Series. Some Germans definitely have a serious sense of engineering humour. Who else would make a 4.0 BiTurbo 4WD E Estate with 600bhp and then fit a 2WD selected "drift mode" in it. I cannot imagine the dogs face when you put him in the back of that. It makes those old jokes about Volvo's first season in BTCC with the 850T5-R estates and dogs face sticker in the rear window seem mild.

Under the team he built at AMG the company has gone from a couple of halo models to a sub-brand with enormous and pointy teeth. I just love the engines, the 5.5v8 in the E and ML are utter brutes with an exceptional soundtrack. That alone will keep me off battery driven cars for a bit yet, its the enjoyment not the numbers.

The connections into MB/AMG that he does bring will be worth their weight in gold. If you had to raid a parts bin it's a good one. If it keeps them alive then all the better, look where TVR, Bristol and other reputed marques are now. We will see if he can keep the British essence for whatever that can be defined as?

I think it is the best place that it could have landed given this climate.

Just to be a pedant Alistair the BTCC Volvo estates were neither T5 or R. They were 2.0ltr 20 valve naturally aspirated 5 pots. What TWR claimed they did to them was actually done by Cosworth and the VVIS system was developed by Porsche.

I was working for Volvo Cars UK at the time but the fact they were building race estates was secret even from us we thought they were just ‘Mules’ which in fact that’s how they started until they popped them in the wind tunnel and saw the numbers!

Understood Colin, it was a hilarious bit of marketing and I wish more companies could manage to poke fun at themselves. That five pot was great and made such a lovely noise.

I even purchased a black T5-R saloon as a company car and did 60,000 miles in it so the marketing worked. Most comfy seats I ever sat in.

Good to hear, I had a couple as company cars, in training I changed the vehicles every 6 months and the staff cars were on that list so new metal was always available plus we had the use of the training cars (we had 29 training cars and only 16 staff, everything from 340’s to 960 Limo’s). My favourite was a special build for me, I could pull things like that back when I mattered ;-), V70 AWD R with the earlier T5 engine which was a bit more torque than the R with the Scandinavian Spec. Effectively it was a press car (we built some very special cars for the press launch!).

I was walking through the Volvo Museum down in the harbour in Gothenburg (highly recommended) and Rick Rydell was doing a presentation on one of the race cars and explaining how little of it actually went down the track..... very little was actually still standard.

Sadly Ford pulled the plug on the funding for BTCC.

This is good news, which should help to secure Aston Martin's future. It gives them guaranteed access to some of the best oily bits in the industry. The pace of change in terms of emission regulations and compliance seem to make it virtually impossible for an independent manufacturer to keep up on their own.

I see the share price is up about 5% on the news, and up to £54 from a low of about £30 in June. With the confidence brought in by Daimler Benz' investment, I reckon now could be the time to have a little punt.

Heard a good joke on this one today.

Aston Martin have robbed more banks than Ronnie Biggs.

They have certainly taken more money, even taking the original Heist at 2020 values...£2.6 million in 1963 would be £46 million today...

I have really come around to liking the latest Vantage - if I didn't have the Aero it would be top of the replacement list.

They seem to get rave reviews on the You tube vids I have seen but they always get slammed by having to use second or third gen Merc sat nav equipment - that needs to change.
