Hi

I have a new temp gauge for my S1. I have removed the moulded black plastic undertray either side of the steering wheel, but getting to remove the old temp gauge looks very tight on hand space for anyone over the age of seven, even after disconnecting the wiring from the 3 warning lamps below the gauge..

I thought maybe I'd drop the dash panel to give better access, the first securing nut is easy to get to on the passenger side where the dash kicks up & meets the wood at the base of the windscreen. However, I can't see any securing nuts/bolts on the other side. Can anyone please advice on how to drop the dash, or maybe advise alternative ways to fit the gauge

Ian. Unlike the trads with the smiths gauge with a single bracket behind each gauge from memory there is a panel or bracket that holds them all in, one leg over the running board i got into the footwell the loom of wires are huge be carefull but firm there is little movement you might have to move it slightly to gain access. Also make sure you dont distrupt the windscreen washer pipe.` Em

Thanks Aerotaff, I'll have another look tomorrow morning, but it does not look obvious where the other securing brackets are. Appreciate the help though

Hi Aerotaff. could not remove the dash. Instead I unplugged the old gauge & plugged in the new one (hanging under the dash). It still did not read correctly.

Morgan specialist had done a diagnoses & it pointed to the gauge, but now not so. Have already changed engine bay sensor. Not sure what to do now. The car does not overheat at all, I'd just like to know what the temp. is though

Hi Ian. After an italian tune up and you leave the engine on tickover for a min or so does the fan come on. Mine has only come on once and never since i put a few bottles of the water wetter in it.The gauge when warm the needle sits two notches down from the centre of the gauge summer or winter extreme heat or snow heater on or off. The oil gauge drops off dramatic on tickover when warm on the series1. They all do that sir but the first time you notice is a bit of a shock. Em

I've not had a problem with the oil gauge thankfully. I know the fans come on & I've used an infrared heat gun to check when they do come un (can't remember the reading now but it was within the generally accepted range).

If it isn't the gauge or the sensor I'm not sure what it could be. The Morgan specialist did a fault diagnosis & ruled out the ECU being at fault. The gauge only gives any find of sensible reading on a trailing throttle, otherwise it flickers wildly of just rests on the needle stop at the bottom.

At least I know it does not overheat, but it would be good to know what is going on with the coolant temp

Presume you have tried the senders/thermostat?
I have had similar issues on cars in the past and they had the wrong or a sticky thermostat in, so it was cooling to much and thus never letting the engine reach full operating temperature.

So using an infrared gun you know the coolant system is getting up to temp and the fans cycling, meaning that it can only be a sensor, the gauge or the earths to them.

Is this a new development or is the car new to you and you are trying to make it better?

I have fitted a new temp sensor & using the infrared gun water remains a constant 104 deg C.

I have had the car for about 3 years, but this problem has occurred over the past 6 months or so. I can live with it but I would prefer to know if there is a cooling problem in advance of overheating/damage
