Lets be honest here! We only fit a bonnet strap because they look cool in a retro sort of way....the bonnet is hardly going to fly up on its standard clips.
The biggest pain for me is not paint scratching, its washing the car.....trying to drape the ends somewhere ( a Simmonds double buckle strap) so they don't get soaked and then stretch. Forgotten how many times I've had to refit the straps due to stretching!

You're right of course.
Having asked Life's to throw one in as part of the deal, I'd feel a bit awkward removing it now.......
It is purely cosmetic.

I have the original strap. It is like a shrivelled up old piece of beef jerky. Is there any way to resurrect it?

Something like saddle soap might work. Ask your local saddler.

Something like saddle soap might work. Ask your local saddler. A visit to a Saddle is a good idea. I have used Saddle Soap as recommended on my water damaged Luggage Straps. It did bring them up well after several applications. The downside was that during the next downpour, the impregnated soap frothed up, washed off and I was back to square one  . It is easy to re do Luggage Straps as they come off after each trip. A Bonnet Strap need something more durable, I would have thought. If you quote this tale to the saddler, they may recommend a better product.

Try KO-CHO-LINE. It will impregnate the leather and restore it and will not foam up in rain.

If you don't mind the smell a thin coating of 'Neatsfoot' oil will protect the leather after cleaning with saddle soap. We always used it on tack after cleaning.
Use sparingly though or it will stain the paintwork...
