Just before lockdown I had the 9 year old tyres on my P4SS replaced. I chose Toyo Proxes CF2s in thesame size as the originals and as recommended by Kevfitz of this parish. I was expecting them to improve the wet/cold grip but the most pronounced improvement was to ride comfort. I had heard about that before but never having had 9-year old tyres on a car I was surprised how much better they were. So, if you want comfort, go out and buy some tyres (other remedies/checks to be done as appropriate of course). And seems like a good excuse for a couple of pictures on the way back from the tyre deport before the latest restrictions. https://www.tm-img.com/image/tGKHUhttps://www.tm-img.com/image/tG8pc

I have Toyo Proxes CF2 on my +8, 6 yrs old and they have done 33k miles with lots of tread left. And I don't always potter about. They are 205/60/15, £28.93 currently delivered on Demon Tweeks. A crazy price.

A crazy price. That sounds a good price! For 205/65R15 V rated, after a fair bit of shopping around I paid £61 each fitted at my local tyre depot. I thought that was a good price but prob could have done better... The original Avon Tyres from week 21/2011 had covered 19,500 miles and still had 5mm tread.

9 year old tyres would also have been dangerous. The compound as you observed with the new tyres had hardened on the old ones. I usually change them after 6 years

I've just changed mine after they've been on the car for 11 years, they were still pretty good. Tyre Companies recommend changing at 7 years, but if you keep them in a dark garage most of the week (Sunday drives) the sun can't get at them and deteriorate them any where near as quickly and they can last an awful lot longer.

It is a new car to me so tyre changing from the safety aspect was one of the first items on the list. As I say I was just stunned by the amount of the difference in comfort. Speaking to a friend in the tyre business at manufacturer level he said that the number of heat cycles is the real arbiter. Once they have been through a certain number of heat cycles (through normal use) then they've had it! Age is given by tyre makers as a proxy for number of heat cycles I guess.

UV and ozone also attack the compound. On my S1 Roadster it came with 8 year old tyres. Before I could change them I managed 180 degree skid on the A5.
