Amazing achievement.

As to how likeable he is, the single mindedness required to really succeed at the top of elite sport can often make someone seem less than likeable; just think about Andy Murray compared to Tim Henman. It's that killer instinct, the drive to win.

Went to my 1st F1 (Silverstone) back in 2018 if i recall Lewis Hamilton the winner, it was like watching Paint Dry, never again.

Well done Lewis - I like the way he shows his thanks to the team and always gives them the credit for his wins. He also has a social conscience and uses his fame to highlight concerns about human rights etc.
A tremendous race in Turkey - some great action.

I went to Silverstone the year Nigel Mansell won the World Championship (1992), I had grandstand tickets so I thought it would be great, how wrong I was. Apart from the pre-start grid and the last lap when Mansell crossed the line (fans invaded the track as he approached the finish line) it was really dull. I vowed never to go and watch a live race again, it's so much more interesting on TV because you get to see all of the action at all of the corners plus the replays.

I have only been to one live F1 race. I think I picked a good one. The 1993 European Grand Prix at Donington Park when it rained heavily all day. Senna was masterful. We stood near the hairpin. In those days, the traction control was obvious to spectators in that you could hear it in operation. By the third lap, Senna's traction control was not being used. Prost was a wuss - IIRC 5 changes of tyre. I have never been so wet. It was a great day.

My first F1 race was the Oulton Park Gold Cup, in 1971, followed by the GP at Silverstone.

I attended for a few years, until maybe 1978. But yes the races were very boring from one vantage point.

The good thing was seeing the drivers in the paddock smoking and drinking under sunshade umbrellas, just an arms length away.

I was there too, somewhere in the loft I have one of those foam seat cushions you could buy with an FIA logo on it, my lasting memory is sitting on the Coach trying to get out of the car park, we moved 50yds in about 2hrs

I think watching live at the circuit and on TV are 2 totally different experiences.

There is an atmosphere at the circuit that you obviously don't get watching the tele but to really get to see the race in detail, tele is best especially on Sky who have developed their F1 coverage to an immense degree.

Of course back in the day the TV experience was fairly basic to say the least and on the other hand going to see the GP live was very much cheaper and you could get so much closer to the action.

Ahh, the good old days.

That's why I love drag racing - you get to see the entire race from the comfort of your seat. Couple that with cars with over 10 times the power of a F1, and open access pits where you can get within inches of the cars and drivers as they're being worked on. Proper 'no frills' motorsport

I thought I would fact check your "10 times the power of an F1 engine" claim.

To my amazement I see that Top Fuel Dragsters can develop 11,000 horsepower.

Sorry I doubted you but I have to go to Santa Pod next year to experience that.
