We are slowly starting to reconstruct a Plus 4 Morgan which I purchased as a project.
One of the issues that I have is that the gearbox cover does not seem to fit the current gearbox.
The gearbox is stamped EB 14869 JS
My colleagues believe that this is a Jaguar gearbox - research suggests that it may be a Jaguar XKE E-Type S1 3.8 Mk X Moss Gearbox

The car dates back from 1965 and is fitted with a Triumph engine and from what I can gather the engine is original.
So my question is does anyone know whether is this a good modification and whether anyone has a Morgan gear selector mechanism which will work with the car?

Many years ago (probably at least 20 and possibly even 30?) in Miscellany there was an article about the interchangeability Moss gearboxes , as this type was used not only by Morgan but by Jaguar and others (Humber Super Snipe , anyone remember those?)

Without a reliable index system this is going to take a lot of finding, so please don't expect an answer any time soon.

I think there are many differences between the Jaguar version of the Moss Box and the Morgan , the top cover and gear selector mechanism being only one of them. There are experts out there (Billy Bellinger at JB Sports Engineering) who may be able to advise you better and more quickly. It may be quicker (and cheaper?) to buy a complete Morgan Moss box , but these are very rare items now and the price will reflect this, however you should be able to sell the Jaguar box for a tidy sum to offset this.

By sheer coincidence, I have a copy of the April 1976 Miscellany that contained the article (44 years ago).

It is the same as the information published on GoMog written by Tim Cree but also includes an exploded view of the box internals.

As John said, doesn't look as though it's suitable for the Morgan.

Wow, I am impressed! Tim Cree used to revel in the detail of these topics, and it is nice that his work is now (at least partly ) available on line .

Andy many thanks for the contact at JB Sports Engineering. Bill is truly a walking, talking encyclopidia. I sent him a couple of pics and he confirmed that the gearbox comes form a Jaguar XKE E-Type.
A real gentleman - he went through and explained to me in detail the differences between the gearbox.
The JS gearbox do fit a Morgan but require modification. Rear gearbox mounting to the chassis and driveshaft which takes the power from the engine via the input shaft and coupling.
Problem solved.

That is good news.

According to Colin Musgrove's book Moggie, the Moss box used in the Plus 4 (and early Plus 8s) "is very similar to those used in the Jaguar range of cars ... Up to the Mark 9 and the XK150. He says the HR box fitted by Morgan from 1956 corresponded to the Jaguar "close ratio" box. He goes on to say "no Jaguar box is a direct replacement ... Prefixes SH, SL, ODL and M indicate a box with internals identical to the Morgan box". Most importantly he says ""the most important suffix to look out for is JS ...this is to be avoided at all costs. The box looks like a Moss but is Jaguar made and no parts are usable in a Morgan application". Sorry.

And let's not forget Billy's dad, Jack. Been racing his Moss box Plus 8 since Adam was a lad and before that, a very quick 4/4!
