Graham .... the microwave reference was tongue in cheek .... as an ex Comms man the thought of walking within feet of a 60Kw transmitter at 90 khz going full chat every 4 m or so down every suburban street doesn't appeal at all! .... and with the inevitable tolerances and age creep the beat frequency issues don't bear thinking about. As you say, low frequencies are still in commercial use (there's some impressive masts near us at Crimmond that are still well in use) .... those masts would be well less than 60Kw and the spill radiation was enough to disable my car's immobiliser parked at the Bird Reserve at Strathbeg over half a mile away ... had to call the RAC who towed me a mile up the road at which point everything worked again .... driver said it was a common call out. HF is used for planet-wide ship to shore for a reason ... even a modest transmitter will cover the world with ionospheric bounce....and they're talking about a mega power transmitter for every car ..... what could possibly go wrong? smile

I’d go EV if the cars were cheaper to buy. The majority are significantly more expensive than ICE versions of the same model. I’ve posted before about the current trends in filling cars with tech and toys that increases cost and reduces efficiency. How much cheaper could a car be without this tech, added weight? Our motoring pattern of journey distance fits easily within pure EV range and low annual mileage. I like our Kia Sportage and the Nero looks good, but £38k? That is problem number 1
Number 2. Battery tech (but that is improving), carbon footprint of and components of batteries.
Number 3. Infrastructure for generation and distribution of power. HS2 is a massively expensive project for dubious gains. Smart meter roll out not really well managed. Fast broadband not well managed. Green power gen is improving but by enough? How about re-introducing attractive feed in tariffs for solar? Easier than building nuclear power stations, even mini ones (RR style).
The long term aim of politicians is ok BUT.....diesel was treated the same. Go diesel to reduce CO2 ( we will ignore NOx though). Proclaiming good intentions is easy but implementation so often poorly thought out.

Isn't that why we were all encouraged to move to diesel a few years back?

Personally I think I will wait for the mini-micro cold fusion power plant that is obviously the power source of the future. I can't wait to get one fitted to the Plus 4. It should be ideal for activating the Flubber.

There was me thinking that wireless charging was to be done by inductive plates in the ground, not microwave transmission from a mast, where did you read that?

The UK CO2 emissions have fallen by about 30% since 1990, with a few notable exceptions many of the EU countries have the same or higher CO2 levels compared with 1990. Ireland eg is 10% higher than 1990. The UK current per capita CO2 emissions are much lower than eg Germany, in part due to the UK de-industrialisation and creation of a service industry, the UK is still around the 8th/9th biggest manufacturing economy in the world, so quite an achievement such a reduction under the circumstances. EU has overall higher CO2 emissions compared to 1990 30% of which is from transport and is about to hammer its car industry big time with sustainable green investment criteria, and tough emissions standards coming in very shortly, which will screw the industry in the EU and starve it of investment for the new green technologies (as per the industry ). Recently forecast that a million manufacturing jobs are at risk in Germany

Already ,Mercedes, VW have major investment and manufacturing facilities being built in China, if the EU follows this path out of step with the rest of the world we may see production moving to the UK and elsewhere.
.

Milligoon .... we weren't suggesting it would be done by masts (hence comment about walking past a charging spot every 4m down the street) .... for contactless charging from plates set in the ground there will still have to be massively powerful radiation across the gap to the pickup plate under the car with the resultant loss and leakage .... when you're talking multi Kw of radiation that RF leakage is not something I'd like to be around .... one thing charging your electric toothbrush or phone with mw sat on a pad overnight ....the power transfer to charge an EV in a reasonable time is another thing altogether.

We shall see if contactless charging gets beyond the experiment stage to working examples in the wild

In the real world it sounds very dangerous to me. Even ignoring the RF leakage the risks of road diggers being electrocuted or joe public as pot holes develop makes that for me a non starter (excuse the pun)
