I think they are intended to be aero aids (more image than actual no doubt). Sort of like the 'sideboards' on F1 cars.

That spoiler makes it hard to clean and for all the times you drive over 100 miles per hours it is nonsense. Put the Cooper spoiler on it and enjoy cleaning your car rather than cursing the experience.

I think they are intended to be aero aids (more image than actual no doubt). Sort of like the 'sideboards' on F1 cars. Also to allow for a wider offset of the wheels. Unfortunately, the concept car was, as is often the case, far better than the reality.
