Hi all,
Any advice on pulling outer bearing races from the hubs? The outer inner bearing came out easy. The oil seal too, then the inner bearing lifts right out. But both outer races are stuck in the hubs. Should I try and whack them out (gently of course), with a drift, or is one of those blind hole pullers is the way to go?

I use one of these to push out evenly dont use a drift or if you damage the hubs..... You may need an attachment to the end of the rod to fit the bearing Untitledpress by Robert & Ali Davies, on Flickr

I’d use a brass dolly that way no damage. Regards Simon

How bad are the bearings, bad enough to need replacing?
I run a thick bead of MIG weld carefully around the bearing track then when everything is still nice and hot, I belt them out with a large hammer and drift

If you do choose to buy a bench press you won’t believe how useful they are. Not crazy expensive, a basic one is a few hundred dollars and it’s not just bearings that they can be used for.
King pin bushes pressed in and out, all sorts of assembly work, holding small parts for drilling (how many times have you needed 3 hands?) I even used mine to bend sheet steel and metal strip. I had hear of MogBoxes coming detached so fabricated a safety clamp using the bench press.
One of those things that have you wondering how you ever managed without one.

If I had room I would get a press. Changing front discs last year....stuck onto the hubs. A press would have made that job easier! It would double up as a fruit press too. Mmmmmmm home brewed cider.

This is for races which are impossible to remove any other way and it needs to be done with care and safety glasses! Run a weld round the inside of the race about middle of the width. When the weld cools the race will fall out. Bear this in mind when thinking of the stresses set up by welding chassis tubes like the M3W ones!

Great advice all. For those that use the press, it’s not a straight shot down at the bearing. How can you push them out with a straight press?
I did manage to get them out safely with a drift. But you really must angle the thing to get good purchase on the bearing race lip.
