Tried an Aeropress with a variety of coffee but tasted poor compared to Lavazza pod and this latest Delonghi machine - but whatever works for you.

Relating to using soft water for making coffee........

Is the water that comes out of a de-humidifier "soft" water and I wonder if it could be used to make coffee?

Don't think I would try it, the water in your de-humidifier would contain bacteria which wouldn't be killed exactly the opposite it would increase if you heat you water for your coffee to the correct 65 degrees.

We have a private water supply, the water is so hard it ate through 2 HW cylinders and the central heating boiler before someone recommended a water softener. No issues since and not all that expensive. Can't honestly say I noticed any difference in my tea or coffee, though Mrs Ds hair did stop turning green when she dyed it. sick2

I've always been led to understand that you shouldn't drink water from a watersoftener. Soomething about salt I think. Don't most systems have a bypass tap at the sink to provide drinking water?

Early water softeners did leak salt, from the resin regeneration, into the softened water as well as exchanging calcium and magnesium with sodium.
Modern ones do not: it is recommended that you have one cold tap of unsoftened water, but it isn't required.
Only those on a very low salt diet need to be wary of softened water. Mo most of us there is far more salt in processed food that we eat than will be adsorbed from soft water...
We have had one for almost 20 years, the saving on soap, detergent, shampoo, etc is remarkable,

This is a good explanation...

That's interesting Peter. Like Nick, I believed that a water softener was only for non-drinking water, that was certainly the case when I last looked. I shall re-evaluate them, thanks for the link.

In my setup I use three filters, a 10 micron spindown sediment trap, a charcoal canister and an Everpure ES07 (softener and filter) to get all the water numbers in correct alignment for drinking and machine care. I use a TDS meter and test strips. I know when it is time (besides logging dates) because you can tell when the water starts to taste differently, and therefore the espresso taste starts to go off.
