Personally I like the automatic lights and wipers. They function well on the Jaguar and as I live in an are with lots of tunels I find the auto lights really useful.
I think the real problem is that daytime running lights are only at the front of the car. Something I have never understood. they should be front and rear. Volvo DRL’s do use the rear lights as well not just the fronts.

I think the real problem is that daytime running lights are only at the front of the car. Something I have never understood. they should be front and rear. Buy a Volvo, they are. One of the problems with auto headlights is that they may not be on when they really should be and a lot of drivers do not think. I once followed a large Japanese 4x4 utility for quite a number of miles from Evesham to Stoneleigh. Variable fog thickness. One could tell when the car detected thicker fog as the tail lights came on. However, when light levels lifted a little, despite the fog still being quite thick, they would go off again, usually prompting flashed headlights from a few oncoming vehicles. 4x4 driver seemed oblivious to what was going on. Mind you that was probably a normal situation...

I think driving without lights started when it became the norm for the instruments to be illuminated full time. Mind you some never look at the instruments so would not realise it was too dark to read them. Auto lights are not good enough to switch on in all circumstances when lights are needed but many disconnected driver dont know & rely on the auto function. Then there are the idiots who see a bit of mist & switch on the rear fog lights or still drive at high speed with fogs on.

And then there are the idiots who think it is a good idea to have the fogs on all the time.
