[align:left][/align] sorry to come back re above this way as i seem to be unable to reply so thanks to the members who have helped with answers as the gauge works fine with minimum resistance showing as full on the gauge , that would suggest that the float is leaky thus pulling the actuator arm down holding the gauge at empty, am about to remove the sender to repair special thanks to richard cheers bruce

Good luck with repair Bruce. If need be you shouldn't have a problem getting another sender of correct sense, plenty of pattern ones around. Just make sure its to work with 10 volt stabilised supply.
