Easy to check as your provider is supposed to split your bill accordingly

a,Drinking water (potable) supplied in cubic metres, based on meter reading or rateable value
b,Sewerage disposal which should be the same volume as above
c,Surface water charge, based on a nominal area in M2

Like all stats providers mistakes are made, their 'puter systems have glitches & add in human numpty error, so it's well worth checking

Oh, and unless you've ten sprogs, look at having a meter on your water supply, as it also cuts your sewerage charge which most people don't realise

Does that apply in Scotland as well? Any ideas?

Boab, I seem to remember that some years back there was a shop owner in the Argyle Arcade who was protesting about being charged water rates when he did not have a water supply in his unit let alone toilet facilities... I think the justification for the charge was that somewhere along the line he would be sheltered from the rain and that water had to be directed to drain.... If they don1t getcha one way they will get you another...

We have soak aways and a £40 rebate on the water bill. The water here in Suffolk costs 2 x what it was in Bucks. That despite the fact all they do is use an aquifer to get the water, so no real infrastructure like reservoirs to maintain.

I would add that when we bought the house we had to tell the water company we had soak aways . The house is on a Taylor Wimpey estate was secondhand but 1 year old when we bought it. The previous resident had the rebate but somehow it didn't transfer.
The lesson is clear check your bill.

I suspect many of us have experienced both!

Here we have different pipes for Storm water and sewerage. 100mm nice and strong pipes for sewerage and 90mm very weak for storm water. However many people use 100mm for both after having the 90mm stuff break on them.

Connecting the roof to the sewerage is illegal as it overflows the treatment works when it rains. I have never seen it but been told very now and then they will pump smoke from the sewerage system looking for smoke from the roof to find houses with the storm water connected to the sewerage system.
