We're in the same position. Our Fiat 500 is 5 years old and has done only 8,000 miles. It makes no environmental sense to change it for and EV, it's still got a good 10 years life in it at least. I'm thinking that just as buying a used ICE car is better for the environment than buying new, the same should be true for an EV, and as we do such a low mileage any range restriction is not going to be an issue. If we drive any distance it would be in the Morgan anyway.

Me too. This rush to BEV means that a lot of cars will be scrapped before their natural time so the ecological cost of the manufacturing and the normal life cycle will be wasted thereby effectively increasing the ecological cost per mile of the existing fleet.
I also suspect neither side of the argument is correct. I suspect that a lot of batteries are not going to last as long as projected so the real figure is probably somewhere in the middle; let us say 40,000 miles.
I once used to do huge mileage but now I do less than 20 thousand km (12K miles) a year (and less in a Covid year ) and more than half of that is in the Morgan.
I was going to swap the Jag for something else but because diesel has now been given such a bad name it is worth SFA so I will hang on to it as long as I can. The result will be an ecological saving for the planet.

Yep, there's a big difference between overall trends and specific cases.
Would it be a good idea for us to use modes of transport with lower CO2 emissions? Yes, absolutely.
Does this mean we all have to ditch our ICE vehicles and switch to BEV? Of course not. On an individual basis, the easiest way to reduce our footprint is to walk and cycle more, drive less, and keep what cars we do have for longer.
If we do need to buy a new car, then we need to be planning on keeping it for more than just a couple of years, and if we're going to be doing more than say 10k miles a year we definitely need to be thinking about an EV.
To my mind, what's going to change most people's minds is peer pressure and societal expectations. In the 1970's it was entirely normal and widely encouraged that people should smoke cigarettes. Now smokers are widely shunned and treated as outcasts. In 10 to 15 years time the same will be true of ICE car drivers.

Thanks for posting Jon, getting there aren't they. If it could lose 1000kg to get down to mere 1800kg it would be even better. All in good time I suppose. I wouldn't fancy throwing a 2800kg vehicle around a country lane let alone a track.
I did read the other day that the average classic car owner driving 1200 miles per annum produces the same amount of Co2 as your computer/mobile, study from the CEBR ? Looks like we will be getting our first EV at work early next year, Polestar is out of the running now and it'll be a Tesla 3 based purely on the number of local(ish) superchargers.

Starting point: 1L of petrol has 8.9kwh available, so the 70L tank of my C63 has 623kwh, it is recharged in about 3 minutes and weighs about 75kg, including the tank.
The largest capacity EV battery is 100kwh from Tesla = 11.23 liters equivalent and takes 30 to 60 mins to re-charge. OK, that Tesla can get a real world range of 300 miles from 11.23 L of petrol shows just how inefficient ICE cars are.
My C63 weighs 1730kg, kerb weight. A Tesla Model S, 100kw, weighs 2241kg so 500kg more, most of which is the battery.
I'm still offended that the car has to carry half a ton of batteries.
Hydrogen fuel cell electric cars are the future: they will be roughly the same weight as an ICE car, have the range of and ICE car, but the efficiency of an EV. Refilling a hydrogen tank will take 5 mns.
I'm waiting for Hydrogen power to arrive....

Young people, who are the future of car ownership and driving generally, are pretty much tuned in to EVs, and this is where manufacturers seem to be aiming their marketing. If we were in the market for a car now we would most likely be looking at an EV but it will be better for the planet if we keep our current car until it is no longer viable to repair or is legislated off the road.
