Grammar School refugee.

Enjoyed woodwork, metalwork and art. Come the 3rd form and I had to drop 2 of these. As I intended to study Architecture I opted for art.

Stupid boy.

Became a Civil Engineer instead.

My school reports always contained somewhere “ if Robert gave as much energy and commitment to his studies as he does to rugby and cricket, all would be well”!!!!!
Anyway if it interested me - fine, otherwise, no! 10 years after leaving school, I got a scholarship from the bank to Limerick university and came out with first place in the year and then qualified as a chartered secretary! It was the passport to promotion and I finally retired as head of credit for the east of Ireland!
It goes to show that a) good teachers who interest the students are gold dust and b) A levels or Leaving cert results are not the only way to get ahead.

More faith in myself, I believed others and gave up at 16.
On balance, I think I managed to fulfill my form teachers comment on my final report “Kevin is a good lad, I hope he does well”.
No real regrets looking back, wonderful family and a rich life, so far ........

So many things...I was a 'late developer' (well, that's my excuse).
My head was in the clouds, my mind adrift form the stuff on the blackboard in front of me.
But I got through it all and ticked my mother's box to get a good job, which I held down for 43 years.
It took a long time to complete that development though...
