And what about a "WMD" plate?

I have V8, V12 and W12 in the WMD's... not sure they'd work. I quite like the moderately anonymous plate it has.

It's a Model 3 Long Range with a performance upgrade, so around 3.5 0-60 which feels quick enough. My Range Rover costs around £130 to fill up and has around the same range as this, which costs £6 at home to fill or free on Superchargers. Doesn't need servicing or road tax. I have only done 35 miles, but it was quick. smile

What is a WMD plate?

If mother nature had decided to write off my Octavia instead of my Silvia I could have been tempted to replace it with a Tesla Model 3. I really should have a test drive one day.

£130 to fill up compared to £6 is very impressive however comparing running costs doesn't make the Tesla in Australia as impressive as it appears in other countries.

Octavia generally gets 800km from 50 litres meaning 6.25L/100km at $1.30 per litre = $8.125 per 100km

Tesla 3 uses 16kwh per 100km from what I have read but I think fun driving makes it more, electricity costs $0.23 from the grid or $0.52 from Tesla Super charger and then there is the $0.25 per KM state tax for electric cars.

100km charged at home = $3.68 + $2.50 = $6.18 per 100km
100km charged at super charger = $8.32 + $2.50 = $10.82 per 100km

So while 90% of the time I would charge from home as I have a garage and would install the charger it actually costs more per 100km to drive the Tesla than the Octavia if I had to use a super charger.

WMD = Weapon of Mass Destruction..
So W12 WMD on a W12 Bentley engine, on the basis that big ICE engines are viewed by some in the anti car green lobby as little better than a weapon of mass destruction.

Chris, if you installed solar panels,a Tesla could be charged for free + plus there are many free destination chargers in OZ and full EV's also have much reduced service requirement.
regarding the $0.025/km has not yet been passed by parliament and thus not implemented.

I'll be fascinated to hear how you get on Neilda.

I have recently been changing car and seriously considered electric. The Tesla would suit me - I needed an estate / hatch but the Kia Niro fitted the bill and has a respectable range in the real world not far off the Tesla 3. In the end I decided it was still too early and the problem was longer trips. Electric cars are unarguable for local journeys within say a 100 mile radius and if you can charge at home overnight. . But over that distance and the infrastructure and range are still not there. People forget that the range drops significantly in winter and with motorway use. They also forget that you cant use the full range at any time - you cant walk to the filling station for a can of leccy! And given that the charge time for a leccy car is 30 times as long, mile for mile, as a diesel car the implication is that we need a significant multiple of charge points compared to the number of fuel pumps together with a space for the vehicle to stand. You will do better with a Tesla because Tesla have put in much more infrastructure but I still see problems coming.

As I said, it will be fascinating to hear how you do in real use and to see if I am over thinking / being timid or not. Keep us posted..

For the non Tesla potential owners, this is an interesting watch. Effectively charging meant 20% longer journey times

I know I’m not Neil but.... (with apologies for length) have been running mine since end of June.Official distance to my office is 23 miles, mainly country lanes with a bit through small town. Power used says I use on average between 30 and 38 miles electricity... there is a 12 mile stretch where I don’t hang about, shall we say, but rarely enter “stupid” mode. If I drive cautiously it gets much closer to actual distance. Even on longer journeys haven’t suffered range anxiety at all. V v quick and great for overtaking. To be honest you get used to that bit v quickly (as well as lack of a dashboard/using central iPad or app on phone to control) so it’s not abused. Noisier than you’d expect from wind/tyres. V easy to drive. The sensor systems are amazing, almost too sensitive so have learned to keep foot over accelerator when using the adaptive cruise control (and tend to avoid using using that in towns). Reversing camera detail is extraordinary. It’s comfy for my knackered joints. Quality of build is ok but nothing special. Only complaint is a squeak somewhere behind the dash in warm weather (thought it was the right shocks to start with but it moved over the summer) and I stopped using the sentry system after the alarm went off a couple of times one evening on the drive (which was bloody loud). Neither enough to kick off about.
In terms of charging I decided against paying for a wall charger and instead plug it into garage wall socket once or twice a week, partly just to keep topped up “in case of emergency “. It’s always topped up by morning. I’ve only used a Tesla supercharger once (just so I know how to use if I needed to - there aren’t many many round where I live).
I’m loving being able to defrost the car/get the heated seats going before I go out on these winter mornings....good stereo system and satnav which is v easy to use (and I’m defo a technophobe so must be easy), but mainly link to my phone for my own playlists.
It’s a company car. Would I get one of my own when I retire....at present I’d have to say yes I would although I wouldn’t mind an extra 100 miles or so range but not a deal breaker....
Just my penny worth for what it’s worth...
HB
Ps for a saloon also has loads of boot space plus a boot within a boot plus a “froot “ or front boot as there isn’t an engine as such....

I’m with Howard on this one.
For me it’s still too early, I’d like one and for most journeys a full charge is more than adequate. My stumbling block is I like renting cottages or B&B in my travels around our great country. Few if any have charging points and I’m not sure many if any would be over the moon trailing an extension lead so I can charge my car, for a supplemental payment of course. Many hotels have no points.
One of you intelligent chaps might know. What happens if you do run out of charge? I believe there are issues towing an electric car. Can you get the equivalent of a “jump start” by plugging in a supplemental battery?
Oh and how long if left standing, at airport car park for instance do they hold a full charge?
Thank you to the better informed than I

If one would be happy with an EV for 99% of their usage, and were only concerned about very occasional long-distance requirements, would it make sense simply to hire something on those occasions?

If I go on any sort of motoring holiday it's in the Morgan, so it's not an issue for me, but I shouldn't think it's too brutally expensive to hire a car for a week or two, especially when offset against the minimal running cost the rest of the year.
