Gordon to the best of my knowledge all dedicated LED headlamps are essentially sealed units albeit with considerably greater life than filament bulbs.
Thanks for that Richard. Without wanting to start a thread drift, would you have to carry a spare whilst driving in France? And do these lights require the beam deflectors when driving on the "wrong" side of the road?

Yes & Yes, although you could just carry a basic cheap halogen bulb as a spare (to comply with a roadside spot check)

There are of course r/h dip versions available as a quick although admittedly expensive swap. Regarding the French law, I don't see how it can be applicable to dedicated LED headlamps which are essentially sealed units. LED bulbs in filament bulb reflectors may be viewed differently. TBH this French regulation although probably well intended and valid at introduction seems now outdated, for cars with OE LED lighting at least

Not to mention that on some car models (Renault Modus for example) it is necessary to dismantle half of the front bodywork to access the headlight bulb.

Keith as far as I can see the Tribar headlamps you refer to don't come with a light source although apologise if I have this wrong. You fit either a halogen or LED bulb. Not sure of legality of latter as a unit though.
Richard, They are Euro and UK approved and supplied with either halogen or LED according to the site.

To sum up, correct me if wrong. HID illegal due to cleaning/self levelling needed. LED legal. I have Nightbreakers in my car and they give a slight improvement. Not earth shatteringly better.

Have a look at this previous post regarding HID units. In essence the whole headlamp as an assembly needs approval.

Yes, I read that. The important thing appears to be two fold. E-marked by the manufacturer and self levelling/cleaning system on the car. So you could buy e-marked units but would need self levelling/cleaning mods to the car to use them. The units must be complete as aftermarket conversion kits of bulb/control unit are not allowed. A Morgan would be an interesting candidate for self levelling! LED is ok with the proviso of the lights being correctly adjusted as is the case anyway for standard lighting.
