Think about that‘s in a house it‘s not so cold and not so hot as in car.
So a product as wax which works in-house mustn‘t work in a car. In this point it‘s interesting that in the past a car interior wasn‘t waxed.
If you‘re afraid about dust in your garage let the colour deep dry (for two or three weeks) and than „polish/ finish“ it with the finest sanding paper you can get. In Germany there is 1000 or 2000 possible.
And: your dash looks really good, is on my wishlist for the next hibernation.

Have you thought about epoxy coating.
I used West Systems 105 / 207 a few years back when I re-furbished an old Solo dinghy.
Clear finish and it can be fine sanded and polished to a very shiny and deep finish after it has hardened.
Build a small polythene tent if you're worried about dust.

That's an excellent idea. 30+ years ago, my Dad refinished the family dining table with epoxy. When he told me what he was going to do, I had doubts. He was right and I was wrong. The table still looks as good as when he did it - although passed along to my sister when parents downsized 7 years ago.

Hi Rene, IvorMog, PaulF,
Thanks for the replies. In no particular order. I had originally thought about using Rustins two pack finish for wood but could not get any info from them about it and I did wonder if they are not making it now. I have used the Easy composites two pack finish (for carbon fibre) and still have some so I could try that. I have a four post lift so it would be easy to make a tent underneath. I have been testing some of the finishes and it just takes so much time. Also finishing off the details of the glove box, etc has been more difficult that I thought.
The car has been unable to be moved for a long time as I gave myself too much work to do, dash, SSL 5 link, and club sport update (ex-pipe still to do) so I have made the decision to get the car running with the test MDF dash. This will give me the time to finish the real dash properly. Another thing that does not help is getting old, (75 earlier this month) it’s a bit of a bu**er but I can’t work 8am till 10pm every day in the shed these days (LoL), along with the fact that the fingers just aren’t as nimble as the used to be. I’ve also got some work on the Elan to do, how had time to work I’ll never know. Cheers John

Thanks Paul, that's my hope. The test dash is back in and the engine runs and all the gauges work so that's a big bonus. Cheers John

I’ve finally got the dashboard finished. I tried a few finishes Treatex, lacquer etc but the one I liked the most was coloured wax for the first few coats then clear wax polish. Sorting the glove box was a major job what with the locks, hinges and the door stop. It’s now all back together and working. I am very pleased with the final result. Here are a few pics.
