I remember the accident well and as Richard mentioned it was a mess. Aquaplaned at speed and went rear end first into the Armco.
Its been for sale for some time and I was wondering why given its low price.

I looked at this. Having in the past had a couple of Cat D cars the generally tend to be valued at around 25% below market value. If this car was worth £80k as a private sale with clean title then 60k would be market value as CAT D private sale...even less as Cat C. The seller should be declaring this (if advertise on Auto Trader they usuall pick up on this and mark it as such).

Cat D does not necessarily make the car bad or a rogue. If properly repaired (jig alignments etc) then they can be good buys albeit at a reduced price. A lot would depend on the extent of the damage, repaired or replaced parts, quality of workmanship. It is rather bad that the ad doesn’t state CatD especially at what appears to be a near full second hand price. It should be lower. The car could well be a good one but it will carry the Cat D stigma, whether deserved or not. As a comparison, think of a restored barn find that has been rotting away. I once went to see a Porsche 944 as a possible buy. The car had been in a minor (front wing) smash but there was full photo detail of the repair and it was good. What put me off was the story of repeated struggles with emissions ( a friendly MOT garage was used!) i backed off. Sorting the emissions could well have been ££££££.

I think this car is/was owned by an ex speedmog competitior who used to print Miscellany If so, his restorations have a good reputation.

Rather than leave out the Cat D I would have put it in and shown the repair work as per the article so a fair judgement could have been made with all the facts. Anyone buying a car like that is always going to look about.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

That was the point I was making really, why the subterfuge, at this price you won't get away with it.

The repair work is probably of the highest standard but it will always be a Cat D on a very expensive car ,,Em

Definitely a 2012 Accident, December if I remember correctly

CAT D means the insurance company doesn't want it repaired at the price a main dealer wants for the labour, because the dealer doesn't want the job.
There are many CAD D cars bought from insurance companies by Main Dealer Mechanics who, in their own time, repair it. CAT D is nothing to do with the safety of a car, it is, in my view, a device used by dealers and insurers to sell more new cars.
