Ian, from your build year I suspect the steering rack gaiters as per Richard's photo above, the maker of the OE rack clearly use some inferior quality rubber/part as I'm on my second set, It's getting annoying as next time will be an MOT fail at my cost mad

Richard,
I have just changed the rubbers of an 2 year old steering rack with the same problem. Very small cracks in the rubber.

Just to add the Car Builder Solutions universal gaiters I linked to above are easily chopped down to the size to fit. I offered these to my dealer on the understanding he would fit either MMC warranty one's or mine dependant on which was the more supple and therefore less likely to split again. He chose mine, the CBS ones.

The gaiters can leak from the ends where their lips fit into narrow grooves in the racks main body. They are secured with plastic cable ties which can be replaced by more durable steel ones. Cain at Wolf Performance suggests these ties are wider than the main body grooves though, so do not exert pressure to give the best seal. He advocates narrower ties to better match groove width, also allowing better location.

I would suggest that even if gaiter(s) appear intact when attempting to cure a leak, they be replaced then as its only a matter of time before the less compliant OE ones will split, on recent cars at least. This would have saved two independant warranty claims on my car never mind the inconvenience.

Hi Simon
I think you may be correct about the underseal as it is the correct colour. Also there was not a lot of it and today on inspection seems to have stopped.

No power steering on the car so not that, but a good suggestion.

MMC use an electric assist motor on the column (so no fluid involved) even if it did have PS

Underseal on a 2020 Mog will be black & waterbased since MMC set up their own treatment bay a few years ago (once it's cured it's a bu66er to shift and does not dissolve in solvents or melt easily
