I thought the foiling cats of the last AC series would be boring to watch, but it turned into an incredibly exciting series.
These foiling monohulls seemed even more absurd, but I have to confess to enjoying the racing over the last three days, which has been close and tactical. Team Ineos performing in both light and strong winds was a surprise.
However, I’ll definitely be sticking to sailing and racing displacement boats. The Impalas give very close one design racing, and at a sensible price.

The Impalas give very close one design racing, and at a sensible price.  Great little boats, excellent class association.

Bring back the J-class !  I agree ... they're great examples of technology and ingenuity but, like so many things on the mass media age, the sport has gone to the extreme edge to interest the viewers who have little understanding of the nuances of racing and the attention span of gnats .... and left the realities of what real sailing is about far behind ...... old-time racing was a celebration of the peak of the skills needed for sailing in the real world ..... not a completely unrelated skill set only of use for a few minutes in an artificial arena. Perhaps if they acknowledged the unreality of it and didn't sell it as sailing, but a seperate sport of 'Foiling' it might work .... it's certainly spectacular enough to stand on its own .... and let the AC go back to hull-boats and the real sailing world K Would love to see the J-class, but realistically it might be a little far fetched.... I do understand that AC series needs to be something spectacular, extravagant and dinosaur-like, and I also understand (and applaud) the need for innovation, development and creative design. So that rules out smaller boats, and also one-designs. I think the 12 mR boats fulfill all these demands, and would love to see them back. The race course would have to be more viewer- and TV-friendly than the traditional triangle, though.

An amazing comeback indeed for Team Ineos. Those who were writing Ben Ainslie off back in December are clearly not people who have followed his career very closely. One of the greatest sporting competitors ever.
I know nothing of these awesome machines - but I have today read a thought in the motorsport press that the Ineos-sponsored Mercedes F1 team may have had input to the Ineos boat over the past month. + the thing that I know of sailing is that if Ben Ainslie has a boat that's capable of winning, he will win :-) Will

Yes Will the F1 team have had quite a number of engineers working for the sailing team exclusively for some months now, this helped them change modes and manufacture new components that dont break so quickly over Christmas. This was going on long before Jim announced his shareholding in the F1 team.
Re J boats NZ tried to bring them back for the 88 challenge but were met by a cat from America. Rachel actually sailed on the J boat as her brother crewed on it and succeeding challenges, the boat is still on display in downtown Auckland.

There is an interview here https://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/234569/Skippers-Press-Conference-Terry-Hutchinsonwith Terry Hutchinson. They are not expecting to race until the semi finals now. Along with the significant hull damage all the electrics need replacing, all the other teams have offered their resources to get them back on the water.

So effectively it's just the 2 races between Ineos and Luna Rossa to see who goes direct to the final.
Luna Rossa have to win both races so they will be under huge pressure.
IF LR do win both races they will both be on 4 points so what is the tie break?

I used to keep my boat during the summer on a mooring in Falmout, and when I was there we had the J class yachts racing in Falmout roads. Took my bot out and parked it off one end of the start line to watch. They were a magnificent sight but surprisingly slow by modern standards. Mind you the money involved was unbelieveable - one Ducth boat had a tender come along and it must have been 130ft with all the bells and whistles. Big boys toys! Princess Anne came down - a surprisingly small woman but very friendly.

Just noticed that American Magic have officially pulled out of the round robins so it's a straight shoot out between Ineos and Luna Rossa to see who goes straight to the Challenger finals and who will meet AM in the semi finals.
If Ineos beat LR in the first race on Saturday they might not even bother with the final race on Sunday.
Still don't know what the tie breaker is if LR win the next 2 races and it's all square.
Might get up early on Saturday to catch it.
Edit, just answered my own question ref tie breaker. If there is a tie on points, whoever won the last race between the 2 would go through.
So if LR win both this weekend's races they go through to the final.
Doesn't seem fair to me, should be a sudden death sail off.
