This is only my opinion but isn't JIT production one of the most un-Green things in the modern world? The only justification seems to be extra profit. Perhaps JIT is one of the things we will have to rethink if we are to make any progress in the fight against climate change.
Airlines and cruise ships will also have to be revisited IMO, but manufacturing globally does by far the most damage.
We should all be braced for change, although at 67, it may not affect me a great deal.

I’m not sure that JIT is any less green than old fashioned methods? Could you say why you think so, Barry?

Here is an interview with the CEO as printed in Car magazine. Car I read it that any assurances are only temporary and dependant no doubt on a government bung. It simply doesnt make economic sense to have an assembly plant here producing penny numbers based on 60% imported components when there are half employed plants in France where their major share holder is.

JIT requires components to make many journeys (some long) before final assembly. Surely a more localised supply chain would eliminate this?
I think the days of rampant moneymaking may have peaked although business will have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the new era.

That's an interesting article and the bottom line appears that they have many concerns about their future survival globally and we are the petty cash account, long may that remain so and keep employment levels up in Sunderland.

The carbon footprint of JIT going forward is going to be under much closer examination and scrutiny, I believe a mini crankshaft crosses the channel 3 times before its installed in an engine.......all processes the UK is capable of and used to produce/manufacture/assemble. A key factor is whether battery production (as planned) stays in the UK. The German car industry took a long hard look at the possibility of relocating to UK post Brexit. Relocating production to China seems to be their current preference, even at the expense of German jobs.

regards
