Burgundymog, interesting that the stainless are still ok. Mine which were painted black at the time of purchase, have a large % of the spoke nuts rusty. The rust appears to have come from under the paint. The rims spokes are fine. One would have thought stainless meant all parts.

Although stainless spoke nuts are available, they are much more expensive as tapping threads in stainless is comparatively difficult, compared to creating a male thread. Stainless is also susceptible to โ€œgallingโ€ where material from one component is transferred onto the other, which can lead to them fusing together. In extreme cases, threads can become weakened and pull out. So that could be a reason why your spoke nipples are rusty because they were steel or plated steel rather than stainless.

Stainless is definitely the way to go. I had chrome wires on a 1980's 4/4 and when they started to rust it was uneconomic to have them painted or rebuilt. I had painted wires on my new 4/4 in 2002, sold them on before they started to rot and changed to stainless. Fit & Forget. Don't tell Dave W but I wash them once every year or two and they still look like new! ๐Ÿ˜‡ There's more to life than cleaning a set of wire wheels. ๐Ÿบ๐Ÿฅƒ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿน๐Ÿท

Stainless steel nipples,..... mmmmm....... I suppose they would be worth polishing more than once a year?? ๐Ÿคช

I changed my black painted wires for stainless wires a bout three years ago - painteds were a pain as they needed constant touching up.If you need new tyres as well have aword with Blockley tyres. They supplied MWS stainless wheels at trade price and also gave me a good deal on the tyres which saved me about ยฃ100 per corner. The stainless need very little cleaning - I do the insides at kingpin greasing time.

Stainless wires is the best but most expensive route. Should you choose an alternative say paint or the like option, you could speak to these people:
