I've got some bubbling rust on wings are rear tub corners which I'm going to tackle when the weather gets warmer (was trying to fit a new year bumper yesterday and get no pleasure lying in the snow).

Have you tried one of those 'Chips away' companies? There may also be someone local. I find some of the facebook classic car groups are a good source of contacts. When I wanting my rear core plug replacing (complete engine out) I was quoted some fairly wild prices, but a local bloke (recommended on FB) did it for £150.

When I used my +8 as a commuter and then occasional shopping trolley, it was scraped on the offside rear wing, as it also had a few chips from careless door opening I decided to ask the, best by reputation, body shop on the Island to spray both the front and rear wing at cost of £650. (The colour match to the nearside was poor. After a fair bit of discussion the owner offered either to redo it, but also suggested that also doing the nearside may be be the best solution which he offered to do for the cost of the materials I agreed to that at a cost of another £200)

So 6 years ago a non wings-off re-spray on one side cost £650, this was far from a blow-over, the only difference in quality that I could discern was a slight paint thickening at the beading where it had been masked off. I am pretty anal about the car and not hugely price sensitive in order to keep it top notch, but, even so, I could not have justified the additional couple of thousand which seems to be the norm for a wings-off job.

In 1990 I was quoted £800 for a bare metal respray on my BGT. the shell was complete, with no rust remaining and several new panels.

I didn't get that in writing, and he didn't mention anything until I went to pay, and the bill was £1,400.

He mumbled about it taking more time than he expected. The moral is to get a written quote. But you all know that.

Because this car was for concours and I didn't want shortcuts, I didn't argue, but it cost him other customers who were put off by what happened.

That was 1990. When I sold that car in 2008, the paint was still excellent. No deterioration, no bubbles.

The trouble is that it can work both ways, with the tradesperson costing in a risk premium to cover unforeseen eventualities.

When I had the footings done for my garage, one company said that if I wanted a fixed-price quote I'd be looking at £50k. I told my builder and he said "Bollocks to that, let's just start digging and see what we find, it might be bad, but probably won't be". I ended up with a bill for that phase of £12k.

I read the title and initially thought it was people using other peoples quotes lol, its early :-)

She would have loved to have a go, but it was hired and the insurance didn't cover us unfortunately. I still want a mini digger to play with.

Definitely worth going, We took one of our grandsons there a couple of years ago, he loved it...and I had fun too, he was too small to drive some of the stuff himself so I had to "help".

Not a cheap day out but good fun.
