I’ve adopted a sardine from one of those daytime TV adverts, he has a wife and three thousand kids, just £1 a week helps him provide swimming lessons for all of them.

Quite a catch...but £2 a week and they could actually have moved.

Never had sardines but we used to have pilchards as kids

I was never that keen on sardines/pilchards as a youngster. Mum used to serve them on toast for tea periodically.
I've never bothered with them since mid-teens.

Here’s a delicious alternative.
Warm kipper fillet sandwiches made with good brown bread ( better than plain white) and plenty of butter.
Other alternatives are the range of sardines/ pilchards in various sauces from the likes of John West. Again use good bread.
The bread itself makes a difference. Toast is, to me, a lesser version unless the toast is thick with soft centre, not the crisp baked one.
If you have a toastie machine then yet another way to enjoy them.
A good kitchen extractor fan helps prevent adverse comments.
