Seen them a couple of times on nights at Lossiemouth and once in Canada. Really spectacular, especially in Canada as I was drunk at the time. It was like I was tripping out, man.

Spaceweather. GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: NOAA forecasters say that minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on Feb. 1-2 when a solar wind stream hits Earth's magnetic field. The gaseous material is flowing from a Southern hole in the sun's atmosphere. Solar wind speeds could jump to 600+ km/s when the stream arrives, sparking bright Arctic auroras !! That looks handy Jon! Or would be if it would run on my tablet...

Terrestrial weather says clear up til 9pm tomorrow so will have a look out .... Tuesday looks a write off due to cloud .... but it's the weather so who knows🙂

Spaceweather. CO-ROTATING INTERACTION REGION: What made the auroras of Feb. 2nd so good? It was a co-rotating interaction region (CIR). CIRs are transition zones between slow- and fast-moving solar wind. Solar wind plasma piles up in these regions, creating density gradients and shock waves that can rock Earth's magnetic field. A CIR hit Earth on Feb. 2nd and in the wake of the CIR, solar wind is now blowing around Earth at speeds near 600 km/s. If these conditions persist, more Arctic mind-benders are possible on Feb. 3rd. Tonight might be another possible Keith.

Cheers Graham .... checked a couple of times last night but partly cloudy and no northern lights on show (was sub-zero and breezy so didn't linger too long out in the dark) ..... will check again tonight!

What's the best time as I don't want to be standing outside too long? I know it's probably how long a piece of string is.

Not sure there is a "best" time unfortunately.
Would need to be quite a strong aurora for you to catch the lights as far south as you are though Bob.

Bob ..... if I spot them anytime I'll drop a message to you on here .... if they're visible here there's a better chance of seeing something further south than if they're just hanging round the Arctic Circle ..... it's very rare, but they have been seen as far south as N Wales and North Norfolk ... but I wouldn't bank on seeing that happen again for a while.
