I seem to remember that the UK specs for speed bumps vary with type. There is, I think, a max height of 100mm with a set profile for steepness of edges for the different types. I occasionally ground the chassis cross member on some or try one side of the car over them if room but try to reduce speed or go over at an angle where possible. There are couple of local roads I avoid as the bumps are clearly too high. Carmarthenshire has bumps breeding as if out of control. Our town centre is also about to become a 20 zone over a big area. Local paper had a couple of pages of official notifications. It seems odd that Belgium is retrospective in applying the laws. It a bit like a back door method of removing some cars from use on the road. Maybe worth a legal challenge? The other issue is the potholes. “Australian speed bumps). Councils apply a depth/size limit for filling coupled to waiting to have them reported with lesser inspections. I think their location adds in too. Immediate refusal for damage claims by auto response means you need to be pushy. The war against cars is alive and kicking.

Perhaps another test center Tom? Springs replaced just over a year ago and the taller 195/65 tyres….. ![[Linked Image]](https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/n9yts6824948gx4/clearance.jpg)

Tom
As others have said it does appear that standards are being applied retrospectively in Belgium. Where is the lowest point , under the gearbox crossmember?
I would think about new 4 seater springs which will give you a bit more clearance but 2 cm is a lot to gain. Ask around other owners here about what their situation is with the same model.
The ultimate (if rather expensive) solution would be to fit the SSL rear suspension kit (Around 4000 Euros?) but this is adjustable for ride height and would give you the additional clearance needed I am sure. It also brings many other benefits which help justify the cost (better ride quality , faster and more direct turn-in, adjustable for load etc)

Tom, sorry to hear this change in the rules. I'm just wondering if it would be possible to swap your wheels over with a friend with 70 section tyres for a check to save you unnecessary outlay before you go to the good measures that have been suggested, it could be cheaper were it to work at the test you could swap back afterwards.. Good Luck

Before embarking on new wheels and tyres Tom, have you looked to see where the lowest part of car is? On mine it was the over long factory fit seat bolts, one of which had already been bent on a severe road hump. I gained a centimetre or two ground clearance by replacing with shorter stainless bolts sized to just accept a nylock nut.

My AERO Plus 8 would not pass at all, the silencers and sump plate are all less than 8cm. It seems that the Belgian MOT people are retrospectively applying modern regulations: all new cars must clear 10cm. But so far it is not part of the UK MOT. My road has a primary School, so is a 20mph zone, with speeds humps all the way along. I don't think I'd get in and out with 8cm! Because the low point on the Plus 8 is behind the front wheels as the wheels lift they raise the sump. Most of the time the sump doesn't contact. Around here the speed bumps are "pillows" and I drive over with one wheel on the pillow, one on the road, which also helps. For "fun" I went into the garage and re-measured.... Silencer - 10cm Sump - 8cm. But the Woolf protector adds 1cm, so 9cm. These are with the car empty...

Need to be careful advising different tyres and wheels since these might not be the approved factory standard spec. Sure that wouldnt make a problem in the UK but its different in Europe.
I guess this means that Belgium is no longer acceprting british certificates of conformity or whatever that document is that is issued with every new car.

I suspect the rule has always been 10cm minimum but it is rarely checked at registration or MOT . That is certainly the case in Australia so you run the risk of being failed if you do get checked at inspection or pulled over for a roadside police check. Morgan got a whole lot of trouble and expense fixing non-compliant cars mainly due to sagging springs in new cars. The vehicle needs to be ADR (Australian Design Rule) compliant to retain insurance cover in most cases unless you've told the insurer your car does not comply and they accept it. I could never understand why some in our region go on a public forum to announce their Morgan only has 8cm ground clearance. You spend your life dodging obstacles and good luck with the insurance claim for a new sump that you have smashed.

Evrithing stays as it was.....in Belgium. For Europe, the minimum is 11cm ( when new) and with 2 cm clearance when not brand-new. 2 years ago, the same problem with a 3L Roadster. Tyers on 3bar and I just had 9.5 cm.. Tom, you can PM me if you need help or more info. I m from Antwerpen . And Coc is still required in belgium.
