THE SOLAR WIND CONTINUES TO BLOW: Two days after a CIR hit Earth, solar wind speeds are still topping 500 km/s. This means auroras could appear around the Arctic Circle tonight, albeit probably not as spectacular as the ones that exploded in the immediate wake of the CIR. Meanwhile, another stream of solar wind is approaching Earth. ETA: Feb. 7th.

Sadly, we had cloud and wall to wall snow last night .... not a great night for hanging about outside🙂

Will keep an eye out just in case they're visible this far outside the Arctic Circle on Sunday .... thanks for the updates ...they remind me to go out and look.

I guess this is the problem with paying to go on a trip to the Arctic Circle to see the lights and then they don't appear or are obscured by cloud.

Hurgiegen do northern lights cruises and they advertise that they give you a free cruise if you don't see them! .... as a way to reduce the hardships and hedge your bets that sounds like a winner! ..... in terms of avoiding disappointment due to terrestrial weather it's reckoned Finland is the best mix of accessibility and likelyhood of viewing.

For me, they appear here at the house reasonably frequently .... and with the cycle being on an upswing for the next 4 or 5 years I'll just make a pot of tea and wait for them to come to me 🙂

THE SOLAR WIND IS HERE: Arriving a day earlier than expected, a solar wind stream is buffeting Earth's magnetic field on Feb. 13th. The gaseous material is flowing from a gigantic triangular hole in the sun's atmosphere.
The solar wind speed could top 500 km/s this weekend as Earth moves deeper into the stream. That may not be enough to cause a full-fledged geomagnetic storm, but Arctic auroras are likely?

EXITING THE SOLAR WIND: A stream of solar wind hit Earth's magnetic field on Feb. 13th, sparking bright auroras over Alaska, Sweden, and Norway The show is over now. Earth is exiting the stream, and aurora probabilities are low as the solar wind speed drops toward 300 km/s.

CHANCE OF STORMS TODAY: NOAA forecasters say there is a chance of G1-class geomagnetic storms today, Feb. 20th, as a stream of high-speed solar wind engulfs Earth. The gaseous material is flowing faster than 500 km/s from an equatorial hole in the sun's atmosphere.

CIR HITS EARTH, SPARKS ARCTIC AURORAS: Last night, a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) hit Earth's magnetic field.
A CIR is like a mini-CME (coronal mass ejection). It's a transition zone between slow- and fast-moving streams of solar wind. Shock-like density gradients inside CIRs often do a good job sparking auroras.
