Hello all,

With my front end opened (some of you have seen my threads on my king pins/cross head replacement saga, narrow pulley conversion), I’m getting ready to change the timing chain and tensioner. I’ve removed the bolts that screw into the block and found something odd. On almost all of the bolts, attached to the tip that screws in is a tiny gob of some rubberized material. It’s as if someone put some permatex gasket or a dab of silicone or something. See pic. One of them looks like a little quail perched on a stump. I think I’ve been at this too long.



Is this some technique I don’t know of? Any reason to put goo on these bolt tips before screwing back together? Is definitely not anti seize unless some old brand becomes rubberized over time.

Probably the last person to replace the timing chain cover was over enthusiastic with gasket sealer and some "squished" into the bolt holes as the bolts were tightened..

That makes perfect sense! I haven’t taken the cover off yet, but should tomorrow, and I might run into more of that stuff.
